Things to do in Puerto De Santiago

Puerto De Santiago

Situated along Tenerife’s west coast, Puerto Santiago was once a small fishing village before it became one of the island’s best resort destinations. It is now one of the largest tourism hubs on the west coast, along with Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena, and the three neighbouring villages are often collectively known as ‘Los Gigantes’. Of the three resorts, Puerto Santiago is the most traditional with less development compared to other parts of Tenerife.

When to Go

Regardless of when you visit, sunshine and comfortable temperatures await visitors to Puerto Santiago. The south west coast of Tenerife where the village is located sees highs in the mid-twenties between June and September, with peak temperatures in the high twenties in August and September. Steady trade winds means even the hottest days are comfortable, while water temperatures hover around the low twenties for most of the summer. Winter months between December and February are cooler and wet, although daytime highs still reach the low twenties.

Where to Stay

Perched atop the rugged Tenerife coast, the four-star Hotel Barcelo Santiago overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and faces the dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes. It is a short walk from the centre of the village, which has a small collection of restaurants, bars and shops. Built in 1986 and refurbished in 2006, the hotel has 406 air conditioned rooms set amidst lush gardens and spacious sun terraces. There is also a large pool, a buffet-style restaurant with local and international dishes, laundry and medical services, and other amenities. Hotel El Marques Palace is a three-star hotel just 400 metres from Puerto Santiago’s black sand beach. The modern hotel has 64 rooms along with roomy sun terraces and a large pool. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and a convenient kitchenette. Guests have access to the nearby Sporting Club leisure complex, which features a tennis court, gym and sauna, squash coast, and a lively entertainment programme with live shows.  Although located in Puerto Santiago, the four-star Hotel Playa La Arena overlooks the village of Playa de la Arena. The 432-room hotel also features three bars and two restaurants. In addition to hotels in Puerto Santiago, there are also a range of cheap accommodation options to choose from in nearby Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena. Options include the Hotel Costa Los Gigantes in Playa de la Arena. Just steps from the beach, the modern all inclusive resort includes a relaxing spa and suites designed especially for couples with children.

Attractions & Events

Puerto Santiago is an ideal base for exploring the west coast’s unique black sand beaches and dramatic landscape. Playa de la Arena is just five minutes away and is home to a large beach. With its captivating naturally black volcanic sands, the beach is consistently awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness thanks to its water quality and range of amenities. There is also a selection of restaurants, bars and shops that largely cater to tourists visiting the area. Known for its cliffs and picturesque marina, the village of Los Gigantes is just a short 20-minute walk or a quick bus or taxi ride from Puerto Santiago. The stunning Acantilados de Los Gigantes, or the Cliffs of the Giants, reach heights of 500 metres. A boat ride offers a great perspective to see the cliffs rising from the ocean. From the village, visitors can join a whale watching excursion departing from the marina to see dolphins and other whales breaching the ocean’s surface. Boats can also be charted for fishing trips. Los Gigantes is also home to a top diving centre with PADI certified instructors.
