Holidays to Stockholm

The streets are full of old, brightly coloured buildings painted in russet, terracotta and ochre, all set against the grey blue of the water and sky. Holidays in Stockholm must include a visit to the Gamla Stan; this is where you will find the old town, a maze of narrow alleyways, uneven cobbled streets and a strange collection of old, traditional buildings that give the area its character. The Royal Palace is the main feature in this island, and it is full of tourist-orientated shops, snack bars, boutique stores and souvenir markets. The nearby island of Sodermalm is where visitors on holidays in Stockholm will find the bohemian section of the city. There are the art galleries, coffee houses and buzzing nightclubs.

Crossing to the east is the little island of Skeppsholmen; for fantastic views along the riverfront and the old city, this is the place to visit. Travelling out from the old city to the north is the island of Norrmalm – this is the proud, modern centre of Stockholm, the commercial heart of the new city. This area is full of shopping centres and department stores. Visitors on Stockholm holidays will find the entertainment hotspot of Kunstradgarden Park with its hotels and casinos, as well as the meeting point for the train networks at Central Station, located in this part of the city.

Ostermalm, over to the east, is the tranquil, elegant residential area where you will find the verdant parkland island of Djurgarden, a genuine 17th century warship, the Vasa, and the open air Skansen Museum, which is the largest in Europe.

The island of Sondermalm used to be the traditional working class area of Stockholm, but it has recently been given a refurbishment and is famous for its trendy bars, cafés and nightlife. This is also the area that heavily features in Steig Larsen’s Millennium Trilogy books. Another popular island destination is Kungsholmen, which has started to gain favour as a wonderful place for tourists on holidays to Stockholm to visit for its delicious restaurants and lively pubs and bars.

Stockholm is teeming with attractions and seemingly has a museum for every occasion. There is the Mediterranean Museum, the Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Medieval Stockholm and the Museum of Modern Art. If the weather turns a little inclement you will not be at a loss for somewhere to visit.

The beauty of Stockholm is the village quality that it has, with lots of small self-contained islands, each unique and with a character of its own. There is the old world feel of medieval Stockholm and the vibrant modern city, thriving and buzzing. It is a place with a heady party atmosphere when the moment suits, or a peaceful tranquil backwater where you can sit back and relax. You just have to choose which Stockholm you wish to see.
