Holidays to Costa Brava

Costa Brava is in the northwest of Spain, and it is a region of contrasts. From the rugged mountains through to verdant meadowlands, from the beaches of the Mediterranean to the eroded limestone pinnacles, those on holidays in Costa Brava find it is a place of incredible natural grandeur.

There are no less than five parks in the area. The Cadi Moixero Natural Park is in the mountainous area of Catalonia whereas the Emporda Natural Park protects the marshlands of northern part of the region. Each of the five parks are a delight for walkers, botanists and naturalists on holidays in Costa Brava.

Natural beauty and a warm sunny climate are always an attraction for artists. The Dali Museum in Figueres celebrates the great surrealist painter and sculptor with the most comprehensive collection of his work anywhere in the world. He is also remembered at one of the houses he used to live in. The Dali House Museum in Cadaques gives those on Costa Brava holidays a unique insight into the strange mind of Dali.

The most significant Greco-Roman site in Spain can be found close to the town of el Riuet. The ruins of Empuries offer an amazing look at life in the 5th century BC, with mosaics, wall paintings, bronzes, ceramics and sculpture.

Religion has long played an important role in Spanish life. The significance can be seen at places like the Monasterio de Santa Maria de Ripoli. Founded in the 9th century by the Benedictine monks, it became one of the most important cultural centres in Europe. Close to the town of Ripoli, this Romanesque building looks much as it did when main construction ended in the 12th century. Another Benedictine monastery can be found at San Juan de las Abadesas, and is another fine example of Romanesque architecture.

The towns of Costa Brava are as diverse as the nature. Begur stands in the shadow of a medieval castle, and is a town of coral divers, fishermen and cork. Llafranc is one of Costa Brava’s hidden gems, a tourist destination that has lost none of its charm. Cadaques, close to the French border, is a haven for artists and art lovers. Tossa de Mar has quiet beaches and a stunning pine forest where you can enjoy peaceful walks in the shade of the trees. If you prefer a livelier holiday, Lloret De Mar has everything you would expect of a modern seaside resort.

The local cuisine has many influences, including that of close neighbour France. The fishing towns are obviously the place for seafood but the other parts of the region have much to offer and the adventurous tourist will find much to love in the local gastronomy.

All across the region travellers on holidays in Costa Brava will be able to find activities to keep them busy. Cycling, golf, walking, water sports and horse riding can be found depending on where you are based.

Costa Brava is an area that rewards people who are willing to go off the beaten track to discover the real attractions of this naturally beautiful area.
