Holidays to Spain

Spain holidays may have to be extended if visitors are to see even half of the attractions and activities that await those that visit. The old urban centres of the country exude Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque churches. Add to this many fortresses and palaces, bars and plazas, and you will only be scratching the surface of what this magnificent country has to offer.

If you are taking holidays in Spain and are looking to learn some history, you may want to begin with the most popular attraction on the island of Mallorca. Cuevas del Drach, or the Caves of Drach, consist of three chambers inside the caves. One of the caves is home to Lago Martel, Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world. An underground journey of the lake can be enjoyed by boat as visitors view the many stalagmites and stalactites.

The Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, from the 16th century, consists of two palaces, a housing monastery, and a library complex, all built by King Philip II of Spain. Its intended purpose was to serve all the functions of the state and church. It remains home to more than 40,000 books, as well as numerous pieces of art. It is a wondrous masterpiece of symmetrical design that became the final resting place for many kings and queens.

For those looking for some thrill-seeking adventure during your holidays to Spain, how about a run with the bulls. The Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona hosts this annual event each July, attracting huge amounts of tourists.

Skiing is not something many associate with holidays in Spain, but the country does have some well-equipped natural ski runs. They can be found in the Cantabrian and Pyrenees Ranges. Formigal in the Pyrenees is one of the major ski resorts in Spain.

Some towns certainly worth a visit during holidays in Spain include Avila, which is the country’s highest provincial city. It offers an endless amount of local history to those who make the trek. Ibiza is also a popular destination for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife. Barcelona is one of Spain’s most popular cities as it displays the impressive architecture of Gaudi.

The capital city of Madrid is rich in history while the Balearic Islands are an ideal place for families to find the perfect resort. Seville, the capital of the Andalusia region, will provide visitors with endless amounts of fine art.

Spain lies in a temperate climate zone and enjoys near perfect weather. The months of summer from May to September see cloudless and warm days averaging 21C to 27C. Summer nighttime temperatures can be cooler around 7C to 10C. There are some places, such as the Ebro Basin, where daytime summer temperatures hit 43C. However, summer humidity is generally low everywhere except along the shorelines. Winter months remain pleasant at around 11C for daytime highs, but snowfall is not out of the question.

The Euro is the local currency in Spain.
