Holidays to Florence

Florence represents the pinnacle of Western Civilisation, the Renaissance at its best, packed with creative talent at the time, geniuses who have left us permanent monuments in stone, marble and paint to marvel at and remind us of our comparative insignificance and paucity of spirit. This was the true Golden Age that we gradually fell short of, but as we wander these ancient streets and gaze at the breathtaking works of art bequeathed us by such men, we can catch an echo of the divine and of what humanity is capable of and once attained.

Petrarch, Dante, and Boccaccio pioneered vernacular literature here, whilst architecture was brought to incomparable levels of perfection by Brunelleschi and Batist’Alberti in the 15th century. Banking houses financed the new age of exploration, ploughing profits back into public works that have immortalised those who commissioned them.

Holidays to Florence remind us of the great days of fresh beginnings and boundless optimism, almost like remembering our own exuberant youth after years of being ground down by responsibility and duty. For any lover of museums, Florence will prove a real Mecca and you can spend an entire week of your Florence holidays exploring them. The Galleria Degli Uffizi is one of the greatest fine arts museums in the world, with extensive collections of paintings from the Renaissance. Arrive early because the queues begin early each day, and long before the doors open in the holiday season.

Another prime destination for visitors on Florence holidays is the Institute and Museum of the History of Science, with its enormous collections of instruments in all the scientific fields, showing how they have developed over the centuries from early humble beginnings. You can see Galileo’s original drawings for his pioneering scientific instruments such as telescopes here, along with his own models for them and other devices. There is also a fine cartographic collection in the room housing spheres and globes of the heavens, and one exhibit you must not miss on your holidays in Florence is the middle finger of the right hand of Galileo, removed from his mortal remains.

Amongst the other sights to see on Florence holidays is Giotto’s Tower for magnificent views across the city and the famous 14th century Baptistery with its vaulted ceiling and complete set of mediaeval mosaics.

The Santa Croce Church contains the tombs of Michelangelo, Dante, and Machiavelli amongst others. No holidays in Florence are complete without paying homage to these great figures of the Renaissance, and you will return home with memories of this magnificent city that will last a lifetime.
