Holidays to santorini

Santorini is the perfect Greek island to visit for stunning views and a relaxing holiday; it is suitable for the whole family. Cruises are a common way to explore the island here and take in as much as possible during one trip. A paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean, the island was born of volcanic activity more than 3,600 years ago.

Part of the Cyclades, the islands have become a popular tourist destination with many people around the world. Santorini has a stunning coastline with panoramic sea and cliff views. A section of the live volcano can still be seen to this day. Sunsets on the island are particularly stunning and many people stay up to watch them from a boat.

Thira, the capital of the island, together with another popular village Oia, is lined with shops, bars and cafes to enjoy during your stay. Sampling the local wine is a must-do for many tourists. Oia has black sand beaches and is a stunning place to visit for relaxing in the sun.

In common with the island of Anafi, Santorini is a rare location in Europe that possesses a hot desert climate. There are two seasons here – warm and dry in April to October but cold and rainy in November to March - so choose carefully the month that you visit to ensure the best possible weather.

There are many things to see and do when in Santorini. Check out the best spots for watching the sunset. Oia Castle is a particularly popular area for this, but there are many other locations to consider, such as Firostefani, Fira and Imerovigli. Staying in a cave house is another unique attraction to take part in.

With many museums in Santorini, it is easy to find out about its history. The Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera are well worth visiting. Akrotiri is open to the public and allows tourists to walk around the streets of a prehistoric city. The 17th century buildings there feature incredible architecture.

As well as being suitable for families, Santorini and its famous sunsets make it a perfect destination for romantic breaks and honeymoons. It is possible to dine on the edge of the volcano’s caldera, taking in the stunning views. Greek cuisine is excellent and there are many fantastic dishes to try. Common ingredients include fava, cherry tomatoes, white aubergines and capers. Wine is also popular here and there are many fine dining and gourmet restaurants to try out if you fancy splashing a bit of cash.

If you love a bit of adventure, scuba diving is a must in the area. Guided tours of the island are also popular and can provide a stress-free insight into many local attractions and heritage. With stunning views and lots to see and do, there is a lot to love about the island. Santorini is the perfect relaxing holiday destination, so why not check out which cruise packages are on offer and find one suitable to you?
