Holidays to Paphos

The warm summer months and pleasant winter climate make holidays to Paphos an attractive proposition no matter what time of year it is.

Paphos has much to admire as a modern holiday resort, but it is the history that surrounds the town that make it the ideal base from which to explore. Two miles north of the town is the Tomb of the Kings. Dating back to 300 BC, this incredible archaeological find combines tombs carved from rock with Doric columns to create a site that is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Throughout its history Cyprus has been subjected to invasion, going all the way back to the ancient Greeks. The Romans held Cyprus as a colony and the Roman Governor’s residence was in the town. The House of Dionysus, as the residence is known, is part of the archaeological park and features some of the best preserved Roman mosaics to be found anywhere in the world. The Archaeological Museum has exhibits from Neolithic times, as well as Greek, Roman and medieval times.

The medieval castle close to the harbour is another historic site well worth a look.

Another museum which is definitely worth a visit during your Paphos holidays is the Byzantine Museum. The museum is run by the Greek Orthodox Church and features some incredible examples of Byzantine icons and art.

At the height of the Cypriot summer, you may want to lie on a beach and soak up the sun. Paphos has many fine beaches like Coral Bay to the west of the town. There are plenty of opportunities to cool down with water sports such as scuba-diving, jet skiing, waterskiing and swimming.

During the cooler months, you might prefer more active holidays in Paphos. To the north of the town, the Akamas Peninsula is an excellent place for walking, cycling and horse riding. It is also the ideal place for those interested in the natural history of the island.

For the younger members of the family, the Super Aphrodite Water Park has pools and slides aplenty to give them a different experience from the beach and sea.

There are plenty of places to sit, relax and enjoy the local cuisine, which is inspired by Greece. A meze night will give you a range of dishes to sample, and be sure to look out for keftedes (meat balls) and kleftiko (lamb cooked slowly in a traditional oven). Cypriot wine and brandy is among the island’s best kept secrets.

The nightlife in the town centres mainly around Bar Street. There are a number of lively bars offering karaoke, dancing and live music.

Holidays in Paphos will present you with a modern setting that also has plenty of sites of cultural and historical significance. The excellent climate and the warm welcome you will receive from the people will give you memories of a place that will stay with you for many years.
