At first glance holidays to Limassol are a visit to a very modern city, but it has a history that dates back to the Crusades and beyond. Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and proclaimed her Queen of England in Limassol Castle. Situated close to the Old Harbour, the castle is a fortified building. It houses a medieval museum and provides an interesting look at the history of an island that has many ties to Britain. The Old Harbour is a picturesque place with traditional fishing boats and fine seafood restaurants that will have tourists reaching for their cameras.

Limassol has plenty to offer the art lover. Situated on the seafront, the Sculpture Park was created between 1999 and 2001. It features 20 sculptures created by artists like Victor Bonato, George Tsaras and local artist Helene Black. Silks Gallery, in the centre of the tourist area, is a fine art gallery featuring artists from around the world.

The Limassol Archaeological Museum has a number of displays dating back to Neolithic times and tells the story of humankind on the island. The Folk Art Museum has examples of Cypriot crafts, reflecting the story of the more recent history of the Cypriot people.

Limassol is renowned for its beaches, and with good reason. The Governors Beach to the east of the city is a tranquil place that is reached by a short bus journey. To the west, there is the Lady’s Mile Beach which has virtually no development – just three to four miles of stunning sand. Closer to the city, the beaches are busy, with plenty of facilities.

There are many opportunities for those who like water sports to enjoy the Mediterranean on the holidays in Limassol. Diving, jet-skiing, paragliding and water skiing are among the host of sports to choose from.

Families are well catered for in Limassol. The Fasouri Water Mania Park has slides and pools to keep kids of all ages active and entertained. Sayious Adventure Park has karting, archery, off-road tours and more for those with an adventurous spirit.

Limassol is proud of its vibrant nightlife; there are loads of bars and nightclubs to keep travellers on the go into the early hours of the morning. If you prefer a quieter evening, there is an eight screen cinema showing the latest blockbusters. There are many fine restaurants in the city offering both traditional Cypriot fare and international cuisine.
