Holidays to Dubrovnik

Overview of Dubrovnik holidays

The city of Dubrovnik provides plenty of architectural jewels and points of interest to keep sightseers occupied for a number of days. This remarkable old town almost seems to have stood still in time and a combination of medieval and Baroque planning has left the city a remarkable historic legacy that has survived through wars and occupations. The city walls themselves are still intact to a great degree and can act as a good point from which to get orientated with the rest of the city. A fine way to start your holiday in Dubrovnik is to take a stroll around the ancient structure, some of which dates back as far as the 10th century, to get an overview of the street plan and landmarks of the old town.

Lovers of architecture and history will then have a field day seeking out the remarkable sights within the old town and Dubrovnik holidays are sure to provide plenty of opportunity for discovering atmospheric old churches and monasteries, such as the Franciscan Monastery and Museum, the Dominican Monastery and Museum and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, all of which should appear high on the agenda for any tour around the historical buildings and monuments in the city.

If the walls around the old town have given you a taste for the picturesque view over the ancient city rooftops, then taking the cable car up into the nearby mountains is a way to get a different fix of this sort of pleasure. At the end of the ride, there is a stunning view over the city and the Adriatic and the telescopes will also help to pick out the island of Lokrum.

Although there are plenty of beaches along the Croatian coast, tourists on holidays in Dubrovnik would be well advised to at least try out the island of Lokrum for sunbathing and perhaps for a romantic stroll in the woods. Transport is by boat, which departs regularly from the old town port and the island is home to a surprisingly wide selection of activities, from the botanical gardens near the monastery to the naturist beach on the very south of the island.
