Holidays to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is an island where the welcome is as warm as the weather. The people of the island are rooted in their own traditions while welcoming visitors with open arms.

Many holidays to Gran Canaria are centred on the largest town, Las Palmas. Rich in history, this beautiful city has much of interest for tourists.

The Catedral De Santa Ana is the oldest church on the island, and construction on the building started in 1500. It is a fine example of Spanish architecture in colonial times. The Casa de Colón is one of the most interesting examples of architecture and was the original home of the governor of the island. Today it hosts exhibitions, lectures and seminars. For those interested in art, the Centro Atlántico De Arte Moderno has been hosting exhibitions of modern and avant garde art since 1989.

Away from Las Palmas, in the northern part of the island, the town of Arucas is well worth a visit. The amazing neo-Gothic Church of San Juan Batista is built from lava stone. Other attractions in the town include the Municipal Gardens and a museum dedicated to the distilling of rum.

On the coast is the charming town of Santa Maria de Guia, and three miles from the town is an ancient site visitors will definitely want to see on holidays in Gran Canaria. The Cenobio de Valerón is a series of caves that were used for religious rites and storage in the days before the Spanish arrived on the island. In the centre of the island the Jardin Botánico Viera y Clavijo is a stunning botanical garden which was established in 1952.

Gran Canaria holidays will introduce you to a vibrant and diverse cultural life. The island hosts international music, dance and arts festivals throughout the year. Traditional fiestas are important to the locals and provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the life of the islanders.

For those who would prefer their holidays in Gran Canaria to be a little more active, there is a huge range of activities to choose from including water sports, golf, walking, rambling, horse riding and more. Families are also catered for with water parks, the HolidayWorld Funfair and Reptilandia Park which features reptiles from around the world. Of course there are also the glorious beaches like Playa De Inglés and Playa de Amadores on which to relax and soak up the sun’s rays.

As you would expect in a holiday destination, Gran Canaria has a vibrant nightlife with clubs and bars to keep you entertained into the wee small hours.

Holidays in Gran Canaria offer a wide variety of things to do and see. From chilling out on a beach to absorbing the local culture, from family fun to sporting activities, Gran Canaria has something for everyone.
