Holidays to Denmark

Nestled quietly in the northern portion of Europe, The Kingdom of Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries. It also has two independent provinces: Greenland, which is the largest island in the world, and the 18 Faroe Islands.

Denmark is a country with its share of history and a visit to the Viking Ship Museum is a great way to experience it. Approximately 30km (19 miles) from Copenhagen, visitors will discover five ancient vessels that were rescued from harbour waters.

Serving as a major Baltic port, Copenhagen is the largest city in Scandinavia. It is also Europe’s greenest city as it has a small-town atmosphere, with its narrow streets, gabled houses and many delicate spires that add to its charm. Much of the city’s centre has been designed for pedestrian use only, where bicycles outnumber cars and anti-pollution laws are strictly enforced.

A visit to the Geocenter Mons Klint on Sjaelland Island is a great way to keep the kids busy. This centre is concentrates on the geological history of Denmark, explaining how these modern seascapes and lands were formed.

For the sports enthusiast who has tried everything, why not take an afternoon to experience Kayak Polo while enjoying holidays in Denmark? Copenhagen has the largest facility for learning the sport before heading out into the open harbour.

A picnic in the Assistens Cemetary is favourite way for locals to spend an afternoon. This beautiful park is home to such names as Soren Kierkegaard and Hans Christian Anderson.

Perhaps before visiting the Assistens Cemetary, a visit to Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, as well as the Hand Christian Andersen Museum is a better idea?

A trip to the royal winter palace, the Amalienborg Palace, is worth a visit. Be sure to arrive before noon to see the changing of the guards.

If your holidays to Denmark include a trip to Greenland, the most northern part of the island is where visitors can enjoy Cape Morris Jesup, a mere 740 kilometres from the North Pole. The 18 Faroe Islands are also worth a visit, being volcanic in nature, they provide the most tranquil environment in the world.

Danish holidays will no doubt include some shopping. Purchasing special items such as Royal Copenhagen or Bing and Grondal porcelain, Bornholdm ceramics, Homegard glass or traditional handmade woollens from the Faroe Islands will ensure authentic Danish souvenirs.

Climate

During your holidays to Denmark, you might experience some rather maritime weather. This can include rain showers, misty hill fog, but also long days filled with sunshine. The harbours never freeze and the winter temperatures remain quite moderate, averaging 3C for a daytime temperature. Summer temperatures can see the daytime temperatures peak at 35C.

Currency

You will be an expert with the country’s currency, the Danish Kroner, once you have visited Denmark.
