Holidays to Cyprus

No matter what time of year holidays to Cyprus are taken, travellers are guaranteed pleasant weather. If you choose to go from April to November, sun is assured in the warmest country in the European Union. Travellers can expect average temperatures from 22 to 26 C during these months, with high temperatures approaching 32 and lows rarely dipping below 20. The winter months in Cyprus are mild and pleasant. This idyllic climate is the ideal backdrop to visiting the historic sites and monuments that this beautiful island has to offer.

Cyprus has a rich history dating back to pre-historic times. The Tomb of the Kings, outside Paphos, dates from 300 BC and is believed to be the resting place of the 100 Ptolemaic nobles. It is a combination of mausoleums carved from the rock and Doric pillars.

The legends of ancient Greece are brought to life in Cyprus. According to myth, the Rock of Aphrodite is where the goddess of love rose from the sea. There is also a beauty spot where she is said to have bathed.

The Bronze Age is portrayed at the settlement of Maa-Palaeokastro in the west of the island. It is a well-preserved site and is sure to appeal to history buffs and tourists alike. There are plenty of other sites of cultural interest on this historic island.

There are many interesting towns spread across the island, from Paphos in the south-west to the vibrant Agia Napa in the south. Though much of the island has been developed for tourism, there are still many interesting villages across the island where you will meet a very hospitable people.

Cypriot holidays will offer you a chance to see some fine architecture in the form of churches, monasteries and convents. The Church of St. Sabbas in Nicosia is an excellent example of the opulence of Byzantine architecture and iconography.

If you are looking for souvenirs from your holiday in Cyprus, Limassol has excellent shopping and plenty of places for you to spend your money, as does the covered market in Paphos. The Euro has been the official currency of Cyprus since 1st January, 2008.

For those who prefer more active holidays in Cyprus, the island has plenty to offer. There are plenty of water sports such as diving, jet skiing, waterskiing and fishing. If you prefer to walk or cycle there are many excellent nature trails and cycling routes across the island.

For families there are water parks like the Super Aphrodite in Paphos and WaterWorld in Agia Napa. Other family attractions include the Ocean Aquarium which has over 400 species of marine life and the Limassol Zoo, which has 300 animals.

Food in Cyprus, like much of the culture, is influenced by Greece. If you find a village restaurant serving a meze, a range of fabulous dishes, give it a try – you won’t regret it.

Holidays in Cyprus offer great weather, cultural and historical sites, great shopping, a wealth of activities and family attractions; with all of this and warm people too, this destination truly has it all.
