Holidays to Cape Verde

Overview of Cape Verde holidays

Holidays in Cape Verde are possible at any time of the year, as the climate is generally pleasant all year round, even if there is a rainy season between mid-August and mid-October. The evenings can also get cool in the winter, although at the other end of the scale, things rarely heat up as much as in continental Africa.

The islands are small in size but are home to a good number of quite different landscapes, so holidays in Cape Verde do not need to be entirely beach-bound, even if the beaches are the highlight for many of the package tour deals that are available on the market. Even on the beaches, there is more to life than sunbathing and Cape Verde offers a rich array of pleasures for divers in particular, with the ocean life on and around the reef, plus any number of shipwrecks dotted around the archipelago.

The archipelago consists of 10 islands and nine of these are inhabited, so there is plenty of chance to explore different habitats. On the windward side, the island of Sal is the focus for many holidaymakers, not just because it is the location of one of the international airports, but also because it is home to one of the best beaches on the islands and has become home to a growing selection of hotels, restaurants and bars. The other international airport is on the leeward side, on the island of Santiago and this is home to the nation’s capital, Praia.

The less populated islands can be havens for a range of pastimes, including fishing on Sao Nicolau, sunbathing on Maio or Boa Vista, trekking on Santa Antao or enjoying the local music in the old cobblestoned port of Mindelo on Sao Vicente. The volcanic island of Fogo, where the volcano is still active, presents a treat for fit and healthy walkers, with a hard ascent to the peak taking up to four hours, winding up through lava-based coffee and grape farms to the summit. The more remote island of Brava is less frequently visited by tourists, although ferry access is possible, even if it can be to a slightly unreliable timetable.
