Holidays to Washington, DC

Once nothing more than a swamp Washington, located in the District of Columbia, is home to the federal government of the United States of America. Washington has many of the most recognisable landmarks in the US, including the National Mall and the White House, the official residence of the President of the United States.

Those on holidays in Washington, DC will be impressed by the historic and current symbolism of much of what there is to see in the city. Even though Washington, DC has long had a focus strictly on power and politics it has developed into a city with a major art scene and plenty of classy restaurants, bars and clubs. Millions visit Washington, DC every year to see the sites such as the US Capitol, the White House and the massive Washington Monument.

It is not all political and historical sites, however. Washington, DC holidays can lead to walks though interesting neighbourhoods all with a different character and culture. Georgetown is perhaps the most interesting of Washington’s neighbourhoods, hosting elegant old colonial houses, fancy restaurants and what is definitely a very lively nightlife.

On the topic of nightlife, if you are looking for a classy atmosphere and exclusive venues filled with those high up in government, Washington, DC holidays will provide just what you are looking for. While the centre of the city is quiet in the evening, as few people live there, neighbourhoods further afield such as Capitol Hill, Adams Morgan and Georgetown have a lot to offer. The Eighteenth Street Lounge plays a selection of bossa nova, acid jazz and more to an audience of dressed up, mostly government worker partygoers.

Washington, DC holidays make it difficult to get away from the obvious stately sights and experiences on offer in the city, however. Definitely a must-see is the immense Library of Congress which contains a stunning collection of 144 million items, including historical materials such as a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. The exhibitions change constantly and it is worth going on a guided tour.

The Smithsonian is also hard to avoid: it is the world’s largest museum and research complex consisting of 19 museums and nine research centres in Washington, DC alone. It is such a vast enterprise that it even has its own police force who protect the property, staff and visitors who are on holidays to Washington, DC.

A number of classic spots to get a good view of the city include the Old Post Office Tower, which is free to access and situated centrally; the Kennedy Centre with its rooftop terrace which is also free to access, as well as the Washington Monument. The city has a strict height restriction on new construction which makes it easy to see far across from any relatively high vantage point – certainly a view to appreciate.
