Holidays to Tampa

Tampa has been subject to a fair dose of urban planning and preservation in recent years which has kept the city from being completely dominated by residential developments to the extent that Miami has. That is why the Tampa coastline is that little bit more attractive, with wonderful white sand beaches ideal for a day in the sun or for an evening stroll.

The Bay Area is a diverse place with much to see and do. Just across the Bay Area is St. Petersburg, a compact downtown area with many interesting restaurants, museums and shops on the Pinellas County peninsula. Tampa and its immediate surrounding have plenty of interesting museums, including the Salvador Dali Museum, which is in St. Petersburg.

Numerous Spanish explorers visited the Tampa area starting back in 1528, but it was only in 1824 that the first permanent settlement was founded when the US government created a reservation for the Florida Seminole Indians. 1880 is when Tampa saw its real population boom, when phosphate was discovered in the area. Other milestones include the creation of MacDill Air Force Base in 1939 and the University of South Florida in 1956.

Those on holidays in Tampa will find the diversity of the city surprising. The immigration wave of the 1880’s saw a lot of immigration from Spain, Sicily and from Cuba. More recently Tampa has been attracting Americans from other areas on the continent who find the sunshine irresistible.

Ybor City is the multi ethnic, historic district of the city. It is located northeast of the downtown area and is well known for its wide range of bars, nightclubs and shops, making it a great evening hotspot for everyone on Tampa holidays. It is in the daytime, however, that Ybor City has the most to offer for anyone on holiday in Tampa. The Ybor City State Museum is a must see, highlighting the interesting history of the area. Along the same lines the Ybor City Cigar Museum presents the history of cigar making in Ybor City.

Downtown Tampa has plenty of things to do. Channelside is a big entertainment complex which includes many familiar chain restaurants, an IMAX theatre and a bowling alley. The Florida Aquarium is also a hot spot for many tourists enjoying holidays to Tampa, while the Tampa Theatre has shows running throughout the day and the evening.

For more family-oriented fun everyone with kids on holidays to Tampa should take a drive through North Tampa where Busch Gardens and the Lowry Park Zoo are located. Busch Gardens is a huge amusement park, including a small zoo, with plenty of rides, shows and more – a great place for all ages. Lowry Park Zoo is one of the most highly rates zoos in the US, and a must-see for everyone on holidays in Tampa.
