Holidays to Tadoussac

The closest major airports to Tadoussac are Quebec City, approximately 120 miles southwest, and Montreal, approximately 250 miles to the southwest. Over 90% of the population speaks French exclusively in and around Tadoussac, so visitors on holidays to Tadoussac should be prepared with a smattering of French or a translation dictionary.

The oldest wooden church in North America still exists in Tadoussac. Known as the Old Chapel, it was built between 1747 and 1750, and has been carefully preserved over the years for people to enjoy. Tadoussac has been an important trading location since at least the 1500s, and along with the Old Chapel, a trading post has been constructed according to what is known about the original. Built by Pierre de Chauvin de Tonnetuit and Francois Grave du Pont in 1600, the post was established after the two men obtained a fur-trading monopoly for France.

For nature lovers, holidays in Tadoussac are like holidays in paradise. Whale watching is a favourite activity. Beluga whales live in the area year-round, while other migratory species, like the blue whale, come and go throughout the year. Bird watching also attracts many followers, and the Bird Observatory of Tadoussac (l'Observatoire d'oiseaux de Tadoussac) allows visitors to see many resident and migratory birds that are seldom seen elsewhere. The observatory is particularly active in tracking and learning about the boreal owl, a rare species about which little is known.

During the summer, holidays in Tadoussac can include the Festival de la Chanson, where performers bring their music to you on both land and sea. One of the more unique offerings is a kayak concert, with the audience floating in kayaks and the performers on a rocky outcrop. Music and nature in perfect harmony! If you arrive during winter, try to time your stay to coincide with La Fête Hivernale, or Winter Festival, which has both inside and outside activities and opportunities to learn about this fascinating landscape that takes on new dimensions in the winter. During the summer months, even a leisurely stroll along the marina makes for a very pleasant afternoon watching boats bobbing and shorebirds flying by.

During holidays to Tadoussac, stay at one of the lovely local hotels or B&Bs. The Hotel Tadoussac is the namesake of the town, and offers very comfortable rooms, two restaurants and a lounge. The staff know the area intimately and can assist with scheduling tours or providing advice on the best places for photographs. The Hotel-Motel Le Beluga, located near the Tadoussac Golf Club, has an on-site restaurant serving French cuisine (seasonal) and offers free Wi-fi.
