Phi Phi Islands

Holidays to Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are an important part of Thailand’s resort region. The islands are located between the larger island of Phuket and the Andaman Sea. The sea stretches to the mainland. The largest of these islands is Ko Phi Phi Don, where you will find the only permanent inhabitants of the islands. However, many people taking holidays in the Phi Phi Islands visit the second largest of the islands, Ko Phi Phi Lee. The beaches here are spectacular and the water is crystal clear. Other islands in the area which you will be able to explore include Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Pai), Bida Nok and Bida Noi. Many of these smaller islands attract rock climbers who come to climb the limestone rock faces.

Holidays in the Phi Phi Islands are particularly popular because of the beaches. Many of the main beaches here receive protection from the National Parks system, thus most are inviting, undeveloped and unspoiled locations. Recently, the amount of tourism has increased throughout the region, especially on Ko Phi Phi Lee, but it is still in its infancy compared to nearby Phuket. This is one of the reasons so many visit the islands; they want to enjoy the peaceful, unspoiled surroundings.

Many people take holidays to the Phi Phi Islands for the snorkelling. The water here is shallow, offering easy access to the reefs that surround most of the islands. Unique marine life draws in visitors from around the world as well. The water and wind attracts people who love water sports. Kayaking is very popular here, as is parasailing. Sailing is also a fun activity. Sail boats for hire are available during the tourism season. Many other marine recreational activities also take place here.

Others who visit the Phi Phi Islands do so to enjoy the culture of the people. There is a lack of religious tension here, which has created an impressive level of peace and harmonious living among the inhabitants. Various festivals take place throughout the year, including the Krabi Boek Fa Andaman Festival in November and the Laanta Lanta Festival in March.

In 2004, the area was hit with a tsunami that devastated nearly the entire infrastructure of the islands. However, most of this region has rebuilt. You will find a wide range of new development on the islands, though some of the best areas to visit are those that have withstood the test of time, such as the internal lake that connects to the sea through a cave which visitors can explore.

Take a ride on the traditional Long Boats, which are popular at the port. Gypsy boats are also popular here and are a must-try experience for first time boaters. Tour the coastline of the islands on these boats until you find the ideal location for diving. You can spend your evenings at the nightclubs and restaurants, and your days shopping at the artisan shops. There is plenty to do on Phi Phi Island holidays.
