Holidays to Oahu

Hawaii’s third largest island, Oahu, is accurately nicknamed “The Gathering Place” and is a wonderful mix of different cultural influences where rural and urban communities exist side by side. The island offers those on holidays to Oahu the best of city life in Honolulu, as well as a unique rural coastal experience elsewhere on the island.

It is all about the beaches in Hawaii, and Oahu is no different. With many pristine tropical beaches which are surrounded by lush greenery and waterfalls, Oahu offers a huge range of outdoor activities. Chief amongst these is lying on the beach catching a bit of sun, but surfing, snorkelling and other water sports are certainly a major attraction for many people on Oahu holidays.

Perhaps the most well-known of all the beaches in Hawaii is Waikiki, a half mile stretch of beach on the south side of Oahu. Waikiki is a bustling place with delightful shopping avenues, offering everything from surfing lessons to 5-star dining. This iconic beach area gives those on holidays to Oahu the opportunity to dance along with a hula halau or to enjoy viewing the giant bronze statues in the area.

If there is one sport for which Hawaii is renowned it is surfing, with Oahu offering some of the best waves anywhere in the world. It is a sport that was been pursued by the ancient inhabitants of Hawaii and which was almost forgotten until Duke Kahanamoku, a native Olympic medallist, popularised the sport across the world in the 1920s. Those on holidays to Oahu especially for the surfing experience will find the most challenging waves on the North Shore. If you are not a daredevil you might prefer the smaller waves of Waikiki Beach or Diamond Head. These shallower waves are ideal for body-boarders and bodysurfers as well.

For a break from the water the Polynesian Cultural Centre and the Honolulu Academy of Arts is definitely worth as visit. The former is by far the most popular paid tourist attraction for those on Oahu holidays. The Polynesian Cultural Centre offers an experience of not only Hawaii but also of the many other Polynesian cultures nearby including Samoa, Fiji and Tonga. It is not cheap, but it is a must see for everyone on holidays to Oahu.

Honolulu is a swanky place, and tourists who prefer a touch of the high life won’t be disappointed by the classy 5-star restaurants, slick bars and nightclubs all perfectly complementing a relaxing day in the sun. There are other bold urban places on Oahu, including Kapolei, a fast growing town that is on the Leeward Coast.

Shopping is also a top priority for many on holidays to Oahu. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Centre is in the heart of Waikiki and has over 110 shops and restaurants, enough to keep anyone busy. The DFS Galleria is a duty free shopping district which is a great stop for international travellers looking to save on their shopping expenses. However the largest shopping mall is the Ala Moana Center, the biggest in Hawaii, with 300 stores; it is the 14th largest shopping mall in the United States.
