Holidays to Memphis

Holidays to Memphis will appeal to both new and returning visitors. Memphis, home of the blues and birthplace of rock & roll, is full of energy and wonderful attractions. Music is central to the heart and soul of Memphis. The city is historically linked to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash and none other than the King himself, Elvis Presley. Travellers spending their holidays in Memphis can visit a truly wonderful selection of bars, live music venues, concert halls, blues and jazz clubs, nightclubs and restaurants.

Beale Street is one of the premier music destinations in Memphis. Beale Street has offered visitors and locals alike live music, street parades and a carnival atmosphere since at least the 1920s. Nowadays, Beale Street is home to a truly eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, saloons and musical entertainment.

For Elvis fans Graceland, his favourite home, has been turned into a museum celebrating his life and music. Graceland is a large mansion built in a typical Southern fashion, featuring large white columns and bright, airy rooms. The museum provides tours and access to the Elvis Presley Car Museum, as well as the Elvis in Hollywood and the Elvis Presley: Fashion King exhibitions.

The mighty Mississippi River runs along the western border of Memphis. Those travellers spending their holidays in Memphis can take a river boat cruise on the river, walk along its shores or cross it over the two main bridges in Memphis: the Memphis-Arkansas Memorial Bridge and the Hernando de Soto Bridge. There are major parks along the Memphis shoreline including Greenbelt Park, Confederate Park, Tom Lee Park and Mud Island Park.

Visitors can also enjoy a number of sports in Memphis. There is canoeing, kayaking, fishing and sailing opportunities on the Mississippi. There are also wonderful spaces for jogging, exploring the countryside on foot or simply relaxing with friends or family. Memphis holidays can also give you the chance to see the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team, auto racing at the Memphis Motorsports Park, American football and basketball.

Culture in Memphis does not stop with music and Graceland. It can come as a surprise to visitors travelling for their holidays to Memphis for the first time that the city has a number of world class museums and galleries. The National Civil Rights Museum is built on the site where Dr. Martin Luther King was shot in 1968. The Ornamental Metal Museum has art jewellery, metal sculptures and architecture on display, including prime examples of Mississippi river boats.

East Memphis is home to the Lichterman Nature Centre, featuring 65 acres of lakes, forest grounds and varied animal life. The Memphis Botanic Gardens are a place to relax and unwind, with over 90 acres of grounds to explore and enjoy.
