Holidays to Fiji

Cloudless skies and white-sand beaches are the primary attractions for many on Fiji holidays yet the islands offer so much more. Fiji overflows with friendly people, colourful attractions and plenty of interesting things to do. The capital of Fiji, Suva, has a splendid collection of cinemas, museums, bars and clubs and restaurants.

Fiji is a country that consists of more than 300 islands, lying about two thirds of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii. Only 110 of the islands are inhabited with Viti Levu being the largest one of the islands. Those on holidays to Fiji will find an enormous amount of activities to enjoy on Viti Levu, in the various towns lined along the 486 kilometre highway that crosses the island.

Adjacent islands such as Kadavu and Yanuca let visitors escape to quieter spots. Kadavi is to the south of Viti Levu and has a characteristic collection of small villages along its coast. Kadavi is a mecca for scuba divers that arrive to visit the Astrolabe Reef. Yanuca is big on beaches and has plenty of accommodation options for those on a budget.

Scuba diving is one of the most popular activities for those on holidays to Fiji. It is possible to dive in Fiji all year round and the islands in this country have some of the best coral reefs of the soft kind. Marine life is also spectacular though divers are more likely to see stunning marine life from July to November. Surfing and white-water rafting is also increasingly popular, so for those on holidays to Fiji looking for fun in or on the water there is no lack of activities.

No island holiday would be complete without a good deal of partying and Fiji has a great evening scene sure to please those looking for a high-end, swanky experience as well as for those preferring to spend a more relaxing time. The capital city of Suva is where the action lies with most of the best nightlife spots concentrated on the area between the Civic Auditorium and Albert Park.

Suva does not have swanky shopping centres and department stores. Rather, the island city has a lot of opportunity for lovers of arts and crafts to buy polished coconut shells, woodcarvings, woven goods, pearls and tapa cloths. You might get away with a bit of bargaining at informal sellers but not in most shops. However, you can often obtain a good discount if you buy large quantities of goods.

Throughout the year Fiji hosts various events and festivals, some of which may be scheduled during a visit by those on holidays in Fiji. The most well known of festivals include the Bula Festival in August, the Sugar Festival held in Lautoka in September and the Back to Levuka Festival held early October. There is also an important race every year, the International Bula Marathon, which is held every June.
