Costa De Sol

Holidays to Costa del Sol

Holidays to Costa del Sol will definitely not disappoint anyone hoping to ‘get away from it all’ while still getting a taste of adventure and excitement. For sea and land lovers alike, there is so much to experience along this section of the Andalusia coast. The stretch from Costa Tropical to Tarifa to Gibraltar has an impressive collection of sights, and resorts.

Depending on the kind of holiday you want, choose your home base thoughtfully, as every town in the Costa del Sol region offers something different. For example, Malaga is a vibrant Spanish city that is virtually untouched by tourism while Ronda is intrinsically Andalusian. Torremolinos appeals to young families and the gay community while Fuengirola is more for those seeking a quiet respite.

One of the top reasons for booking holidays in Costa del Sol is the sun and sand. Couples, singles, and families alike can relax at any one of the many beaches, which are all free. Marbella is one of the oldest towns in Costa del Sol and it should not be missed. Visitors on Costa del Sol holidays should plan a morning of strolling through the old town square, visiting the Plaza de los Naranjos and the quaint little shops, all before an afternoon siesta.

Costa del Sol holidays are ideal for lovers of seafood. Do not miss the local fare and delicacies of this region including ‘fritura malagueño’, which is fried fish, squid, and anchovies. Stopping in at Puerto Banús is also a must-do. It is the region’s most attractive and luxurious port, which is ideal for celebrity sightings.

If you love nature, Costa del Sol holidays are an excellent choice, especially if you make plans to visit Cabo de Gato Nature Reserve. Cabo de Gato is a protected reserve along one of the most beautiful and wildest stretches of coast in all of Spain. Visit year-round to see a plethora of local flora and fauna.

You cannot holiday in Costa del Sol without visiting Gibraltar’s Great Siege Tunnels. Known previously as the Upper Galleries, these tunnels were carved out during the Great Siege of 1779-1782. The tunnels can be found at the northern end of Old Queen’s Road. Nearby you will also find the World War II tunnels, though they are less dramatic. Another historic site in Costa del Sol is Acinipo, just north of Ronda. It is the site of an old Roman settlement founded in the 1st century AD. Historians are still not sure why the settlement was abandoned. Today you can see the foundations of old Roman houses, the remains of a theatre, and current excavations along the windswept hillside.
