Holidays to Costa Almeria

Costa Almeria is 200 km of coastline in the region of Andalucia. It is renowned for its warm, dry climate and stunning natural scenery.

Travellers on holidays to Costa Almeria find it well worth making the effort to visit the Alhambra Palace in Granada. This luxurious architectural wonder is the finest Moorish building in the world. It is a wondrous collection of decorated tiles, filigree and mosaics. The sumptuous rooms, shaded courtyards and flowing fountains all created by skilled craftsman, slave labour and the riches of the Sultans, have to be seen to be believed. One of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites, this is truly one of the must see places for everyone on Costa Almeria holidays.

The town of Almeria also features some Moorish architecture. The less grand but still impressive Alcazaba de Almeria is another palace. It features a variety of post-Moorish additions and is an insight into the history of the area. The town also has a fine cathedral. Construction began in 1524 after the previous cathedral was destroyed in the earthquake of 1522. It is an excellent example of a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

There are a number of quiet and unspoiled beaches for those on holidays to Costa Almeria to discover. Los Genoveses Beach is protected by a system of dunes that form part of a nature reserve. San José Beach has perfect sand and Playa del Barronal is another phenomenal stretch of sand.

There are many towns worthy of your attention along Costa Almeria. Garrucha is a lively fishing town that is getting more interest from tourists, but retains much of its original charm. El Ejido is a booming town to the west of Almeria. It has won awards for its contemporary architecture but also features some interesting historical artefacts from Neolithic and Roman times in its museum. The old and the new also meet in Roquetas de Mar, where the old coastal town with its mazy, narrow streets is surrounded by the modern buildings of a successful resort.

The pleasant year round climate makes Costa Almeria the ideal place for a golfing break. The region boasts a number of high quality courses including the championship courses at Alboran and Desert Springs.

The ‘badlands’ of Almeria were where Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns were shot, and tourist attractions have been developed around these and other movies that were shot in the region.

The food of the region reflects both the fine produce of the sea and also an African influence. Spicy clam stew and fresh sardines in a hot sauce are two of the local specialties.

Travellers on holidays in Costa Almeria for the first time find themselves discovering an unexpected treasure. With its amazing history, stunning beaches, glorious climate and warm welcome, it is definitely somewhere you should consider when you plan your next visit to Spain.
