Holidays to Churchill

Known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, this town has traditionally been an area of migration for polar bears, and tourists are now travelling to the area for Churchill holidays to see these beautiful creatures up close, especially as they are being threatened by global warming and the loss of the ice floes on which they traditionally hunt. The Northern Lights are also visible in Churchill, primarily from December to late April, and sometimes again in late August. For those wishing to escape the heat of an overly hot summer, holidays in Churchill offer a refreshing change of pace.

Eco-tourism holidays to Churchill have become a big industry, as the town is uniquely situated to attract both land animals and ocean-going creatures. Beluga whales, ringed seals, snowy owls and many other birds and mammals can be found. Churchill has recently become a prime destination for bird-watchers, and there have been more than 270 different species of birds recorded in and around the Churchill area. Visitors also enjoy walking along the shoreline of the Hudson Bay or learning about the history of the area, which is rich in both native lore and European influence. One of the must-see destinations during holidays in Churchill is the Prince of Wales Fort, the construction of which began in 1717 and reached its current size in the 1930s. It served as a trading post, defence structure and unique community for many years.

Many of the hotels in Churchill offer other services, such as tours, fishing expeditions and flight-seeing, and each has its own unique personality. The Lazy Bear Lodge is a log hotel built by hand. The lodge has been featured on television’s Discovery Channel and features a restaurant on the premises that specialises in local and regional cuisine. The Northern Nights Travel Lodge also has an on-site restaurant, as well as a bar, and features room service, a business centre, and whirlpool/Jacuzzi tubs for the ultimate in relaxation after a long day of sightseeing. For a little more room, the Polar Inn and Suites offers not only standard rooms, but one-bedroom apartment suites as well, complete with a refrigerator, cooker and separate bedroom suite. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms as well. The Tundra Inn is a modern hotel with 31 rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The hotel itself includes access to the Aurora Domes, a warm facility in which visitors can view the wonder of the Northern Lights in perfect comfort during their Churchill holiday.

Whilst in Churchill, be sure to take a trip out to see the polar bears. Churchill’s unique ‘tundra buggies’ allow guests to see the animals safely and from an excellent vantage point. Polar bears are most visible in October and early November, when they gather near Churchill whilst waiting for the ice of the Hudson Bay to freeze over. For a unique experience, nothing can beat holidays in Churchill, Manitoba.
