Holidays to Antigua

Those taking their holidays in Antigua will have no shortage of things to see and do, as there is a wide variety of activities to take part in.

It is said that there are almost as many beaches in Antigua as there are days of the year, and all feature stunning white sand. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants in which to unwind and sample the local cuisine. Sport lovers on Antigua holidays can choose between an ample range of sports such as cricket, tennis, horse riding, hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching and golfing, as well as water sports such as diving, snorkeling, boating and parasailing.

Antigua has two golf courses – the Jolly Harbour Golf Club and the Cedar Valley Golf Club – both of which feature eighteen hole, par seventy golf courses. There are numerous wrecks for keen divers on Antigua holidays to explore, with equipment available to be hired through almost all of the hotels and guest houses on the island. For bird lovers, there are numerous bird species on the island, while Barbuda plays host to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary which features over a hundred and seventy different species of birds and is the largest such sanctuary in the Caribbean. There is also much to see for keen bird-watchers on the nearby islands of Long Island and the aptly named Great Bird Island.

Other attractions for those taking their holidays to Antigua include the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, which has a great collection of cricket history memorabilia to explore, while keen hikers can take the trails to one or all of the island’s multitude of hilltop fortifications such as Fort George (located on Monk’s Hill) and Fort Barrington at Deep Bay. For those wanting something a little more organized, the Historical and Archaeological Society has regularly arranged group hiking sessions. Other activities include guided tours around the island’s various natural and manmade attractions, such as the stunningly beautiful Nelson’s Dockyard, and many hidden caves and off shore islands. Such tours also give tourists the opportunity to see some of the local wildlife in their natural habitats, including dolphins and whales.

Those keen to go on Antigua holidays may want to check their calendar as the island hosts several annual events across the course of the year including Sailing Week, which is held in April and is widely regarded as one of the best regattas in the whole world. There are numerous other boating related events, as well as the more recently introduced Tennis Week, which is held in May.

There is plenty of accommodation to suit all tastes on Antigua, including beach resorts, 5-star hotels and quiet guest houses and inns. No matter what type of accommodation you are most comfortable with, you will find it on Antigua.
