Holidays to Albufeira

On beginning holidays in Albufeira, visitors are immediately struck by the brilliant white buildings set against a cerulean sky. Colours are intense and vivid in Albufeira, as if you are seeing them for the first time.

The town has been influenced by a series of ancient visitors including the Romans, Phoenicians and Moors. Albufeira holidays feature access some interesting monuments and buildings.

The ancient ruins of the Roman wall can still be seen in places around the town. The Municipal Museum of Archaeology gives the visitor an insight into the town’s history and the various cultures that have left their mark throughout the centuries.

The Torre Do Relógio, or clock tower, is the landmark building of the city. Its distinctive iron crown roof decoration offers incredible panoramic views across the area.

Igreja Matriz, the parish church, was built in the late 18th century after the earthquake of 1755 had destroyed the previous building. Featuring a number of statues including one of Our Lady of Concepcion, the church is a fine example of Neo-Classic architecture. Another post earthquake church is Igreja De Sant’Ana which features a wooden alter piece believed to have been made by the masters Francisco Xavier and João Baptista.

Converted from a mosque in 1499, the Capela De Misericórdia reflects both the original architecture of the Moors and the later Gothic construction.

The old town is the perfect place to relax after your cultural sightseeing. There are a number of cafés and restaurants selling the fine local gastronomic delights. The tradition of the town as a centre for fishing continues today and visitors can choose from a fine selection of seafood including tuna, bream, mackerel and squid when dining on holidays in Albufeira.

If shopping is your passion, you can spend many an hour during Albufeira holidays searching the stalls and shops for a bargain. There are many places to buy fine crafts made by local artisans. Items like hand painted tiles, copper utensils, corn husk mats and rag dolls are just some of the products that will give you a little piece of the Algarve to take home with you.

If you are looking for a more active break, the town has plenty to offer. The Algarve boasts a number of fine golf courses to test your game. There are plenty of sea based activities like snorkelling and diving. There are also family activities such as water parks and a marine amusement park featuring dolphins among its attractions.

At night there is plenty to keep you occupied, from lively bars and musical entertainment to dancers and folklore groups.
