Riviera Maya

Holidays to Riviera Maya

Overview of Riviera Maya holidays

Riviera Maya is a region rather than a particular Mexican town. The region is home to a wealth of beautiful Caribbean beaches and many holidays in Riviera Maya are spent either enjoying one of these or comparing the delights of the different beaches in the different locations. However, there is much more to discover in Riviera Maya and time spent on Mayan archaeology, the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, or a Mexican culture theme park is also highly recommendable for any holidays in Riviera Maya.

One of the hottest destinations as far as beach life is concerned is Tulum, which many people consider to be the best looking beach in Riviera Maya. The town around the beach at Tulum also offers a range of hotels, while tour offices offer a range of ways to explore other locations in Riviera Maya. As a starting point for holidays in Riviera Maya, Tulum also has the advantage of being the home to a fine Mayan site in its own right, with an incredible setting on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean.

One of the places to which tours are bookable from Tulum is Sian Ka’an. Sian Ka’an has been declared a biosphere reserve and is home to a unique diversity of flora and fauna and has been recognised as such by UNESCO. Local guides are available to help visitors to understand the incredibly rich area and these guides also explain aspects of the Mayan culture opening that ancient civilization to a new audience.

If you want to get a bit deeper into the Mayan cultural aspects of holidays in Riviera Maya, then there are a number of tour operators that run tours and excursions to places of cultural interest. As well as the ruins at Tulum, the mystery-filled Mayan caves are a popular place to visit in Aktun Chen, while the archaeological site and Mayan village in the area of Coba provide an atmospheric way to get close to some of the ancient relics in their natural habitat.

Still on the Mayan theme, but more in the manner of a theme park, the eco-archaeological park at Xcaret is a family-friendly place to discover a lot more about the history and nature of Riviera Maya, with an evening show and many more attractions to please all tastes.
