Varadero

Holidays to Varadero

Varadero is an exciting and exotic island destination in Cuba. Varadero holidays are filled with opportunities to visit some of the most spectacular and notorious spots of the Caribbean island of Cuba.

Situated on 20km of the Hicacos Peninsula, Varadero is rumoured to have been a home to Al Capone, the infamous American gangster. What is without dispute is that it was the home of the chemical millionaire Iréné DuPont and President Fulgencio Batista before his government was overthrown by Fidel Castro in the 1950s

.

The Mansion Xanadu, built in the late 1920s for Iréné DuPont, has been converted into a hotel and restaurant. Down the road lies the purported former home of Al Capone. Although a local dentist held ownership, it was probably as a front for the mobster. Both villas are stunning examples of 1930s Cuban architectural design, a blend of Mediterranean and Art Deco. They are decadent, sprawling villas that perch on the cliffs of the island, framed by white sandy beaches and overlooking the ocean.

Visitors on holidays to Varadero have plenty of things to do, with the sun, the sea, and the island itself competing for their attention. Non-motorised water sports include swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and Varadero boasts the only golf course in Cuba.

More history is discovered in the La Calavera (Skull) salt mine, where salt was produced in such large quantities that this one cave supplied all the salt for the island itself and also for the Spanish fleet during the Colonial era. Rumour has it that the pirate Francis Drake understood the value of the salt mine and used it for barter in his own nefarious dealings.

Visitors who enjoy the outdoors will revel in the city’s marinas. Chapelín, Puertosol Dársena, and Gaviota marinas draw both local citizens and tourists to witness the sight of sailing boats and yachts bobbing placidly in the harbours.

For the more adventurous tourists on their holidays to Varadero, there is the Hicacos Park on the northern end of the peninsula, which is now an ecological reserve, for nature walks and hikes. Others will enjoy the archaeological sites found in the Ambrosio caves with five intertwined galleries containing 72 rock paintings and artefacts left by runaway slaves from the Colonial era. Mangón Lake is home to 24 varieties of reptile and 31 species of birds, where avid birdwatchers gather to watch migratory flights of 19 of the species. Visitors may also enjoy the Plaza of Americas in Varadero, where events, festivals and other activities take place. Varadero holidays are an interesting mix of art, history and culture, combined with outdoor activities and spectacular resort living. The town’s nightlife is energetic and geared towards visitors on holiday to Varadero.
