Holidays to Winnipeg

Today, Winnipeg holds a central place in Canada’s finance and transportation economies. It is a large producer of hydroelectric power, due to the abundance of water sources nearby, and the city has several lovely bridges crossing rivers and tributaries that provide scenic views whilst on Winnipeg holidays.

Winnie the Pooh hails from Winnipeg and was originally known as Winnipeg Bear, a small bear cub purchased for the London Zoo. During holidays to Winnipeg you’ll find many references to both the real and fictional bear, as the city is justifiably proud of its association. Whilst on Winnipeg holidays, be sure to visit The Forks National Historic Site, a 9-acre park that has been designed around walking paths. You can trace the history of this area over the course of 6,000 years whilst enjoying tree-lined walkways, sculptures and fountains. The Manitoba Museum also offers a walking tour of history, but is inside and is a better bet if the day seems to threaten rain. If you have a car, do drive out to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre, about 20 miles north of the downtown core area. This important resting area for migratory birds also offers chances to view the night sky or dine whilst viewing thousands of birds.

Holidays in Winnipeg include a wide variety of accommodation to suit every traveller. The Fairmont Winnipeg is a wonderful hotel in the heart of the city that offers everything you could need for a wonderful stay. The on-site restaurant has a comprehensive menu, there is a bar on-site, and for those late-night snacks you can order room service. A swimming pool and fitness centre will keep you in shape, and a business centre is on site to keep you connected. The Inn at the Forks, conveniently located adjacent to the Forks National Historic Site, also has a restaurant on-site and offers views of the Red and/or Assiniboine Rivers from many rooms. For those who prefer smaller boutique hotels during Winnipeg holidays, the Place Louis Riel Suite Hotel offers a full range of amenities in a more intimate atmosphere. The modern furnishings of this all-suite hotel will make you feel right at home.

Shopping is a prime attraction during holidays to Winnipeg. Each of the many neighbourhoods has its own unique style and offerings. Large malls, like Cityplace and the Garden City Shopping Centre, offer hundreds of options all located inside, out of the weather. Find some new designer fashions at the Gallery Shoppes or Global Connections, each of which features unique designs that you won’t find anywhere else. Try some evening entertainment at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Manitoba Theatre, or the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Galleries and museums offer beautiful artistic works, one of which you’re sure to want to take home with you.
