Holidays to Victoria

Although it’s located well north at 48° latitude, the city sits in a very temperate zone and is also surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It does get cold in the winter, but it’s generally a very manageable temperature and people enjoy Victoria holidays throughout the year.

Known by the nickname ‘Little England’, Victoria prides itself on quite a British feel. Walking is easy, particularly around the downtown core area, making holidays to Victoria extremely pleasant. There are dozens of little side streets and alleys, each packed with unique shops. The Bay Centre has department store shopping, where you can find a little of everything. If you need some quick energy, a stop at Roger’s Chocolates should do the trick before you head out again, perhaps to Robinson’s Outdoor Store, where you can find something for the biker, boarder or skier on your list. No holidays to Victoria are complete without a stop in Munro’s Bookstore, ‘Canada’s Most Magnificent Bookstore’.

Victoria has a large Asian population, which means plenty of Japanese, Chinese, Thai and other restaurants to choose from. The quality of the food is excellent and good value for the money. During holidays in Victoria, try fine dining at Café Brio on Fort Street, featuring local delicacies and a lovely wine selection. For oceanfront dining, try the Atrevida Restaurant on Galiano Island, a short ferry ride north of Victoria. Here you can watch eagles, whales, and hundreds of shore birds while dining on the freshest seafood available. In Victoria itself, try the Marina Restaurant or AURA Waterfront Restaurant for stunning views and outstanding food prepared by notable chefs during your holiday in Victoria.

Victoria has an ample selection of hotels, from the landmark Fairmont Empress Hotel to smaller boutique hotels and B&Bs. No holidays to Victoria are complete without experiencing afternoon tea at the Empress. Make your reservations when you book your trip, as high tea is almost always sold out quite early. The Empress is a Condé Nast Gold List hotel and features concierge service, a full spa, outstanding dining and outstanding rooms and suites. The Marriott Inner Harbour Hotel is conveniently located for all of Victoria’s sights and activities, and offers an on-site restaurant, business centre, fitness centre, and spacious guest rooms and suites. The Hotel Grand Pacific, adjacent to the Parliament buildings, offers guest rooms and suites with balconies, allowing you an unobstructed view of Victoria Harbour.

Victoria’s neighbourhoods are part of the city’s charm, and if you have time during your Victoria holiday, a drive through some of them will show you why Victoria is a destination people return to over and over again. Victoria West, directly west of the downtown core and the harbour, is its own unique world, almost an island within an island. The Burnside neighbourhood is directly north of downtown, and the Harris Green neighbourhood directly east, each a unique window on the Victoria area.
