Holidays to Christchurch

Christchurch is on New Zealand’s South Island, set in an area with beaches, protected bays and green valleys, in the shadow of snow-capped mountains. Outdoors types will enjoy a stay in Christchurch with outdoor activities including spending time on the beach as well as alpine skiing, hiking and mountain biking. Christchurch holidays can be used as a base for exploring the rest of the natural beauty of the South Island.

The city was established in 1850 by English settlers and this English heritage is visible throughout the town. The Anglican Cathedral in the middle of the square is proof, with the settlers even deciding on the name Avon for the river that runs through the city. Nowadays the city has a more multicultural edge playing host to many foreign students from Asia and also sees many visitors from diverse cultures coming to New Zealand on their Christchurch holidays.

As befits any modern, tourist-friendly city those on holidays in Christchurch will find many world-class museums and galleries to visit throughout their stay. The Arts Centre is definitely worth a visit, a complex of more than 40 arts and craft businesses and performance venues. The Art Gallery is a $47 million facility with over 5,000 items as well as visiting exhibitions.

Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens and Orana Wildlife Park are both excellent spots for observing the local nature. The Orana Wildlife Park hosts numerous endangered species, hosting a large conservation project that does without zoo-style fences and cages. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve’s park area is smaller than Orana but has a focus on species unique to New Zealand, including the kiwi.

Festivals are a big part of life in Christchurch and many on holidays to Christchurch plan their trips around specific activities. The World Buskers Festival is a unique two-week long festival in January, which sees more than 30 comedy, circus and street acts that come from around the globe to entertain visitors in public areas. Christchurch also has a garden festival, arts festival and carnival week, all held regularly.

It might not be a big metropolis but for those on holidays in Christchurch there are plenty of opportunities to shop. The High Street in the centre of the city has an interesting mix of historical buildings hosting cutting edge local designers as well as galleries, cafes and furniture stores. Ballantynes is the upmarket department store, right next to Cashel Mall, which hosts a number of boutiques and bars.

Surrounding Christchurch are many natural beauty hotspots with much of New Zealand’s great wine regions also close by. Blenheim is the largest town in New Zealand’s most famous wine growing region, Marlborough and many visitors on Christchurch holidays take a trip to the region for wine tasting. Arthur’s Pass National Park is also a great place to visit with the option of taking a drive on the historic Alpine highway.
