Holidays to Fiji Islands

Fiji is a quintessential part of the South Pacific. Its island vegetation ranges from lush rainforests and pine forests to mountains and blue-green lagoons as well as more than a thousand miles of pure white, sandy beaches. Fiji is made up of around 333 islands scattered across more than 200,000 square miles of ocean. Of these islands, 330 of them are large enough for human inhabitants. Of all these islands, two of them, Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, make up more than 85 percent of the landmass that is lived on. Only 100 of the Fiji islands are actually inhabited by people.

The Fiji islands are made up primarily of volcanic rock and consist of a very rugged terrain. The smaller islands are predominantly limestone, sand and coral with tiny pockets of vegetation. The islands are divided into three groups, the first being the central islands that are home to Vanua Levu and Viti Levu. Then there are the Ra Islands that consist of the Yasawas and Mamanucas that lie northwest of Nadi International Airport. There is also Rotuma, which is 200 miles to the north and has its own separate culture from the rest of the islands.

Fiji Island holidays will allow visitors to see first hand the several mountainous peaks that extend more than 3,000 feet into the sky. Mountains such as Mt. Victoria or Viti Levu that exceeds over 4,341 feet, are two of the spectacular sites that can be enjoyed. The eastern side of the Fiji Islands are extravagant, claiming more than 112 inches of rain each year. They exhibit some of the most beautiful tropical plains and valleys throughout. These islands are also known for their abundance of fertile plains and rich alluvial soil. The area is also richly endowed with an endless fresh water supply that comes in from several rivers. These rivers run natural and consist of the Rewa, Sigatoka, Ba and Navua and provide drinking water and irrigation to the area.

There is a lot to do amongst the more populated areas during your holidays to the Fiji Islands. Local shops offer everything from ample souvenir shopping opportunities to extravagant restaurants, historical sightseeing and fishing tours.

Weather

The local climate is tropical oceanic but does have some distinct areas. The south and east islands tend to be wetter while the north and west remain drier. Visitors will notice most resorts tend to line the west and south coasts of the larger islands. Any time is a great time to enjoy holidays in the Fiji Islands. The summer months run from November to April and have the greatest rainfall, while winter, which is May to October, tends to be drier.

Currency

The local currency is the Fijian Dollar and uses denominations between one cent and $50. Money can be exchanged at airports, hotels, local banks and currency exchange kiosks.
