Holidays to Melbourne

Melbourne has arguably the most dynamic population of all of Australia’s cities with even Sydney paling in comparison. Melbourne offers much in art, history and culture and a level of sophistication found in only a few of the world’s biggest cities. Holidays in Melbourne present tourists with access to a city that has everything from street art to high-end cuisine, with a good deal of sports activities wedged in the middle.

The natives are known for being friendly, accommodative and very enthusiastic about their city. Residents enjoy the music, fashion, performance arts, design exhibitions and fine cuisine on a daily basis, which makes for a very vibrant and buzzing city full of excitement. Melbourne has over four million residents living in a variety of diverse suburbs, each offering a unique experience.

Close by Melbourne is the Macedon Ranges, a region with some of Australia’s top spas as well as the absolutely spectacular Great Ocean Road, which runs past fantastic scenery, including the Twelve Apostles. For the more adventurous a trip across the Bass Straight to Tasmania is also on the cards. For wine lovers Melbourne is a great base, with many of the fine wine growing regions not far from Melbourne.

The peak season for Melbourne holidays is centred on events rather than the local weather. Many visitors arrange their time in Melbourne around particular occasions such as festivals or sporting events, including the Melbourne Grand Prix. Accommodation in Melbourne becomes difficult to find when there is something big happening, but booking in advance can still save the day.

When it comes to events, Melbourne is a busy place throughout the year. The most famous event in Melbourne is probably the Australian Grand Prix, which is often the first race of the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix season. Albert Park’s streets and parkland is transformed for the period of the challenge, becoming a 5.3 kilometre circuit for a total of four days.

Music lovers on Melbourne holidays will enjoy the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, held in May, an 11 day event that features some of the world’s top jazz artists. The annual film festival takes place in July while the Melbourne Fringe Festival brings the best independent and emerging artists including music, film and performance arts.

Holidays in Melbourne offer top class nightlife, from the arts precinct on the Yarra River to the inner suburb of South Yarra where the city’s gay nightspots are located. Free listings publications are useful in finding the better party spots, with most offering free entry.

Sightseeing during the day can be a very satisfying activity for those on holidays to Melbourne. There is the immigration museum, the ANZ banking museum and the Rialto Towers, all of which provide a unique insight into the history of Melbourne. Galleries include the Victorian Arts Centre and the National Gallery of Victory.
