Holidays to Jeju Island

Overview of Jeju Island holidays

Jeju Island holidays may still be a partial secret as far as western holidaymakers are concerned, but Jeju Island is certainly a top spot when it comes to Koreans. It is easy to see why, as holidays at this destination benefit from the temperate weather conditions of the coastal Pacific island, making summers good for sunbathing on the many beaches, while the natural landscapes offer plenty of beauty and interest at other times of the year as well.

One way to get a taste of the island interior is by taking a trip on Route 97, the East Tourist Road, which takes travellers past a couple of intriguing folk villages as well as giving an introductory view of the volcanic crater at the heart of the island. The route is a good way to get orientated at the start of holiday in Jeju Island, but the attractions on the route can also be reached on day trips from Jeju City, if that is more to your taste.

The volcanic crater on Route 97, Sangumburi, is the easiest to get to on the island although there is an admission charge. Walking in and around the rim is discouraged as it disturbs the local wildlife, but the magnificent views are sufficient compensation for this. Another must-see natural attraction during Jeju Island holidays, again with an entrance fee, is the lava tube at Manjanggul, which is one of the longest of its sort in the world.

There are urban pleasures available on Jeju Island as well, either in Jeju City or in Seogwipo. While the latter of these is notably smaller, the surrounding waterfalls make for some stunning scenery and the slow pace is good for a more relaxing holiday experience. Sightseeing stops such as the teddy bear museum or a submarine tour add flavour to Seogwipo, but it is the island capital, Jeju City, where most holidays in Jeju Island start and end.

From Jeju City, it is possible to take a bus to reach many of the delights of the island, including a good range of beaches and some picturesque island scenery. In the city itself a number of museums are available to pass the time during any rainy hours.
