Holidays to Casablanca

Holidays to Casablanca are the chance to explore its rich architectural heritage, a unique blend of French colonial design and traditional Moroccan style. The architecture is heavily influenced by Art Deco with its beautiful decorative details, including ornate wrought iron balconies, intricately carved friezes and beautiful tile work. Some of the older buildings are in disrepair, but others have been lovingly restored. The Cathedrale du Sacre Coeur can be found on the northwest edge of the Parc de la Ligue Arabe. This imposing white church was designed by Paul Tornon in 1930 and perfectly blends French style with traditional Moroccan influences.

No holidays in Casablanca would be complete without a trip to the Hassan II Mosque. The mosque is the crowning achievement of King Hassan II and is the third largest mosque in the world. Opened in 1933, it is an imposing landmark located at the heart of Casablanca. This vast building rises above the sea on a rocky outcrop which was reclaimed from the ocean. It can hold 25,000 worshippers, with room for 80,000 more in its squares and courtyards. Its minaret soars to a height of 210 metres and at night it shines a laser beam towards Mecca. More than 6,000 traditional Moroccan artisans were employed to work on the building, which has some outstanding decorative woodcarvings and stucco mouldings.

Casablanca holidays can offer something a little different. The Ancienne Medina is the oldest part of the city, and gives an idea of just how small Casablanca was until the French began their programme of building. Entered from the northeast corner, the narrow lanes are packed with shops selling household goods, shoes and clothes. On the north side of the medina is the remains of Casablanca’s old fortifications which date from the 18th century. The bastion, or sqala, has panoramic views of the sea. Nestled in the ochre walls of the sqala is the Café Maure, a tranquil retreat from the city. Its rustic interior and lovely garden with flower-draped trellises is the perfect spot to enjoy the wonderful menu and friendly service.

Holidays to Casablanca can be relaxing, with its beautiful beaches stretching from El Jadida in the south to Mohammedia in the north. The suburb of Ain Diab has a number of small beach clubs which offer a range of activities. The people of Casablanca come here to relax in the summer and at weekends. The beaches are sandy and the locals swim, sunbathe or play beach volleyball or football. Ain Diab is also well known for its nightlife, and there is plenty of activity in the clubs and on the streets after dark.

The Boulevard de la Corniche runs along the Atlantic Ocean. The boulevard is home to a number of upmarket nightclubs and, of course, Rick’s Café, named after the club in the Humphrey Bogart film Casablanca. Anyone who has ever wanted to enjoy a drink and listen to the piano at Rick’s Café can do so on a holiday to Casablanca.
