Holidays to Mombasa

Fort Jesus is one of the main attractions to see on holidays in Mombasa. The fortress may be partially ruined, but its metre thick coral walls are still imposing. The fort was constructed by the Portuguese to control the coastal Swahilis. The fortress was built by Joao Batista Cairato and it has a number of ingenious elements in its design including the angling of the west walls, which makes it impossible to attack one wall without being exposed to soldiers on the opposite battlements. There is a small museum built over the former barracks. The museum features mainly ceramics but also includes items donated from private collections or dug up along the coast. Visitors can go to the far end of the hall to find an interesting collection devoted to the traditions and culture of the coastal Mijikenda tribes.

As befits an old trading port, the city of Mombasa is home to a number of religious buildings. These include the Hare Krishna Temple and the Jain Temple which are worth visiting for their esoteric design, the Holy Ghost Cathedral, a neo-Gothic Christian Church, and a number of interesting mosques including the Khonzi Mosque. Non-Muslims are not allowed inside the mosque, but it can be viewed from the outside. The Lord Shiva Temple offers a warm welcome to all visitors and has an intriguing sculpture garden.

Holidays in Mombasa offer a chance to explore its fascinating past. In the Old Town of Mombasa it is still possible to see evidence of the influence of the Arabs, especially in the architecture and language. The area is renowned for its extravagant art design, ancient buildings and its rows of curio shops that sell popular Kenyan souvenirs and antiques. The streets are extremely narrow so it is best explored on foot.

Another major attraction for those on holidays in Mombasa is the flora and fauna. Haller Park is Mombasa’s largest animal sanctuary. The park has a wide range of animals including reptiles, birds, insects and mammals. There is also a botanical garden. Mamba Village in Nyali is the largest crocodile farm in East Africa. A tour of the farm begins with a video on the lifecycle of the crocodile and this is followed by a tour of the rest of the farm. A highlight of the tour is feeding time for the crocodiles. The farm has an excellent restaurant where the adventurous can try grilled crocodile meat. A good way of exploring the area surrounding Mombasa is a guided cycle tour. The tours take riders through traditional African villages, along the coast and through palm and mango forests.

Holidays in Mombasa offer a perfect escape. Its palm-lined north coast beaches are quiet and the diving is world class with coral, fish, dolphins and sea turtles bringing the offshore reefs to life. Tourists can relax on the beautiful sandy beach or enjoy a variety of water sports including scuba diving.
