Mykonos Holidays

If you are looking for a last minute holiday that is relatively cheap but still offers a certain amount of luxury, then one of the Greek Islands is likely to be on your radar. Set in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos is a great package holiday destination which is as renowned for the best restaurants in the region as it is for its vibrant evenings. Mykonos has a reputation as a centre of gay culture and its nightlife certainly reflects this. As well as this, the island makes for a highly suitable place to stay for families who want to enjoy a quieter break in the sun. You can easily find accommodation that is as near to or as far from the hustle and bustle as you would like.

Attractions and Nightlife

Mykonos Town is a favoured destination for those seeking the nightlife and the gay scene. By day, it is a charming collection white houses in the traditional Greek style. Here you will also see the blue doors and shutters so typical of this part of the world as well as and balconies that are often overflowing with flowers. The older part of the town is a jumble of narrow lanes and make for a great place to explore in the heat of the day as you can find a bit of shade. With a good choice of boutique style shops, designer outlets and excellent eateries, Mykonos Town extends from its modest port upwards on gentle slopes to the centre where you can spot island’s famous windmills which date back centuries. At dusk, the whole place seems to shift gear and there are discos and bars aplenty to enjoy a carefree night out on the tiles.

Resorts and Accommodation

Plati Yialos lies on the southern shore of Mykonos and this is a favoured resort for families, especially those with young children. The town is most well known for its long stretch of golden sand which kids will love. There are a number of upmarket hotels in Plati Yialos but you can also find self catering accommodation and good deals in bed and breakfasts, too. There are plenty of tavernas that are constructed right up to the shoreline. So, if you want to break for lunch then you don’t need to venture far before finding somewhere suitable. The layout of the town affords a real cosmopolitan feel.

About three miles along the coast from Mykonos Town is the sleepier resort of Ornos. Here, there are plenty of cheap package holiday hotels as well as luxury accommodation. Ornos is a good place to stay if you want to avoid the busier evenings out. It is a short trip into Mykonos Town if you want it, after all. However, when you are back in Ornos you could be a million miles away.

Culture and Cuisine

Mykonos has plenty to offer in terms of culture, too. A prime example would be the Aegean Maritime Musuem which opened in 1980s with the aim of preserving Greek seafaring traditions. The award winning museum focuses on the evolution and activities of the region’s merchant ship from ancient times. Most tourists take an interest in Mykonos’ windmills which have harnessed natural power of strong Northern winds. To find the best restored and refurbished ones head to the area around the island’s capital.

Like other islands in the Cyclades, Mykonos restaurants offer typical Greek dishes with a heavy accent on fish. However, there are some local specialties which you should try out, too. Seek out kremmydopita which are delicious as a starter or as a lunchtime snack. They are kind of a cross between a pie and a pasty with an onion filling. Lazarakia is another Mykonos favourite. This dessert is a sweetbread with added spices that include cloves.
