Cape Verde Holidays

Do you dream of escaping to a far-flung island paradise that combines spectacular beaches, mountain scenery, and fantastic food? Then consider visiting Cape Verde during your next winter break. This remote, sparsely populated, and little-known archipelago is located off the coast of West Africa and boasts excellent climate year round, as well as some interesting Portuguese heritage. Tropical beaches, imposing mountain landscapes, friendly locals and great cuisine are the highlights of a holiday in Cape Verde, a remote destination that will make a lasting impression on every traveller.

When to Go

Cape Verde's climate is just what you need when the winter blues starts getting to you: the temperatures are warm but not too hot (averaging a pleasant 26 °C year round), vivid blue skies and 8 hours of sunshine a day are the norm, and humidity levels are moderate considering that the islands have a tropical climate. The rainy season runs between August and October, but rainfall is often limited to brief rain showers that in many cases are followed by stunning rainbows. This means that there simply isn't such a thing as a wrong time to visit Cape Verde!

Where to Stay

Cape Verde is one of the few tropical destinations where you can still get amazing value for money on accommodation. During your island getaway, you can choose to stay in a modern hotel in Praia (Cape Verde's the capital and biggest city), where you will be within walking distance of markets, souvenir shops, cafes, and historic buildings. If you prefer to stay on the beach, an all inclusive stay in the island of Sal is a great choice. The airport is only a 30-minute drive away from most resorts in this island, and the beaches are simply gorgeous: think powdery white sand and turquoise waters, just like in the Caribbean but less crowded and closer to home. There are also a number of private villas and luxury hotels in Sal, Praia, and Sao Pedro, which are perfect if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or to go on a romantic escapade.

Attractions & Events

Cape Verde's postcard-like beaches and wonderful Portuguese architecture are the archipelago's top attractions. Beach lovers will have dozens of options to choose from, although the best beaches are in Sal, Boa Vista, and Santa Lucia. If you are having trouble deciding, why not go on an island tour and discover the best of Cape Verde? The Cape Verdean beaches are not only perfect for sunbathing, diving, and swimming, but also for kitesurfing and whale watching.

These islands are home to delightful colonial towns, such as Cidade Velha (which is in fact a UNESCO World Heritage site), Praia, and Mindelo, which is considered Cape Verde's cultural capital. Cape Verde's towns are also a great place to shop for souvenirs – keep an eye on local handicrafts such as traditional clay sculptures, ceramic bowls, handwoven baskets, and beautiful textiles (such as the unique pano cloths), and jewellery items.

But there is much more to see and do during your holiday in Cape Verde. To fully appreciate the natural beauty of this archipelago, take a guided hike around the spectacular Mount Fogo, which is the second highest peak in the Atlantic Ocean and an active volcano. Fogo is also the place to be if you want to sample the excellent local wines, which are grown taking advantage of the island's fertile volcanic soil.

Despite being a small country, Cape Verde has an exciting events calendar packed with celebrations from January to December. Festivals and parties are an important part of the local culture, with the most renowned events being the colourful and almost extravagant Cape Verde Carnival, which is held in February and celebrated in every town and village. The summer solstice is widely celebrated in Cape Verde: prepare for a delightful night of firework displays and live music during the Sao Joao festival (mid-June). Music lovers will have plenty of opportunities to discover the local music scene thanks to events like the Sal Music Festival (held in Santa Maria's main beach in September) or the Creole Jazz Festival, which brings music and street performances to the streets of Praia during the month of April.
