A Family Holiday in Barbados
01 November 2011

A tropical climate with warm sea breezes, mangroves, sugar cane estates and palm trees awaits you on the island of Barbados. Take the entire family for a well-deserved holiday as you enjoy a winter break filled with outdoor activities, white sandy beaches, blue skies and warm waters.

Located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, Barbados is a small island offering big adventures. For this reason, Barbados Holidays makes it easy to enjoy a laid back holiday with the kids. Set them up for a day of snorkelling, exploring, or enjoying the many kids’ clubs on offer while you take a breather and relax along the white pristine beaches.

Family Things to Do

Take the kids for a day of swimming with leatherback and hawksbill turtles. A dip into the warm waters around the local coral areas will have you within close proximity to these magnificent creatures. They can also be spotted while diving or kayaking or even through the bottom of a glass-bottom boat. To see the nesting turtles you will need to be on the island between February and July.

If you’ve always wanted to know what it’s like to be in a submarine, now is your chance. Take a narrated submarine tour in a real submarine as you head out into the open ocean to watch the marine life dance and play around the coral.

For some history, head over to the Morgan Lewis Windmill. This is the island’s last sugar windmill, which just happens to be close to the reserve. This unique windmill is now a museum that has all its machinery intact, as well as artefacts and old photos.

A great family day is a swim in the Animal Flower Cave. Mostly known for a Billy Ocean music video, the pools are filled with animal flowers, which are actually sea anemones. The attraction is complete with cannons from a sunken ship, a restaurant and rum punch. Another activity for kids is a visit to Harrison Cave. This limestone cavern is filled with stalagmites and stalactites, waterfalls and beautiful turquoise pools.

The Mount Gay Rum Factory is a great place to tour. It is famous for this golden spirit and you can join in one of the many guided museum tours. Take the opportunity to taste some of the main ingredients such as sugar cane, alcohol and molasses.

Where to Stay

The tiny island of Barbados is well known for its luxurious hotels and fine resorts. Many of these cater to families, offering kid’s clubs. This option allows time for the adults to slip away and enjoy some of their favourite activities while the kids are entertained in the kids’ club. A few luxurious family choices include Bougainvillea Beach Resort and Sandy Lane.

If you’re more of a fan of self-catering, there are many apartments and villas that offer families a self-catering option for their stay. Many of these accommodations can be found close to the beach. For families on a solid budget, try the Bajan Breeze. There are many local guesthouses that are child-friendly and will be happy to advise you on the best things to see and do.
