Holidays to San Francisco

Holidays to San Francisco can take first time visitors by surprise. The City by the Bay, as San Francisco is affectionately known, has a wide range of world famous visitor attractions. The city, however, is home to a wide range of different cultural experiences as well. Visitors can imagine they have walked into another part of the world, for example, when visiting Chinatown.

Chinatown in San Francisco is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. Local attractions include Chinatown alleyway tours and a huge variety of restaurants, food stalls and food shops. Chinatown is part of the downtown area of San Francisco and home to Chinese celebrations, events and parades.

San Francisco holidays would not be complete without a visit to Alcatraz Island. Site of the world famous prison, a key location in numerous films, television series and books over the years, Alcatraz nowadays is a museum and place of historical interest. The island can be reached by booking a place on a ferry leaving from the mainland throughout the day. There are also night time tours of the island for those of a steady disposition.

One of the most picturesque sights in San Francisco is the renowned Lombard Street. Called the ‘crookedest street in the world’, Lombard Street is made up of regular hairpin turns that help traffic navigate the very steep slope on which the road runs

San Francisco is not only home to many different people, but also to a range of wildlife. Sea lions, turtles, dolphins and many different fish species live in the bay. Visitors lucky enough to spend their holidays in San Francisco can go out on the bay in privately hired boats, ferries or take bay tours. Staying on dry land, the Aquarium of the Bay can bring you closer than ever before to sea predators, sea stars, rays, skates and many other fish and animals.

The cable cars running in the central parts of San Francisco are a great way of getting around in a unique style. The cable cars are popular with visitors and locals alike, as they can often be one of the easiest ways of navigating the slopes of the city landscape. There are three main cable car routes: Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason and California Street.

San Francisco is known as a freedom loving city, home to libertarian attitudes and frequently associated with a live and let live culture. The city can accommodate different styles and attitudes and as such is a richly diverse destination to visit.

Napa Valley is well developed wine country and a delight for visitors spending their holidays in San Francisco. Some of the top wines in the world are produced here. Visitors can stop off at different vineyards to sample the local products and to compare vintages.
