Holidays to Redang Island
The coral reef formations off the coast of Redang Island are world renowned, so holidays in Redang Island typically involve a lot of snorkelling and scuba diving.
Glorious coral reefs are almost visible from the coast: the clear waters facilitate excellent visibility and the closest coral is only 50 feet from the shore. One of the main snorkelling and scuba diving companies on the Island is Coral Redang Divers, an extremely professional outfit that offer a wide range of options for potential divers. Redang Bay Divers is the most affordable company on the island, so the facilities are not quite as impressive as Coral Redang’s, but the friendly, well spoken staff is on hand to help.
The most popular coral reefs tourists visit on a Redang Island holiday are located close to Pasir Panjang near the Redang Reef Resorts. There is a reasonably small pool of water nearby that is known as a nesting ground for baby sharks; the surrounding water also provides the necessary environment for a number of exotic sea creatures, including turtles, sharks and tropical fish. Underwater cameras are available for hire for approximately £6 per day to take some great photographs of the sea life. Many companies will burn the pictures to discs for you when you return the camera – this is included in the hire price.
If scuba diving or snorkelling is not for you, or once you have had your fill, sea kayaks are available for hire. Beach volleyball is also commonly played around the island. Beyond the two-mile park limit, fishing is permitted and fishing boats are available to hire. There are a large number of resorts located close to the beaches that grant access to the wonderful facilities on the island – something to consider when planning your holidays in Redang Island.
Alcohol is widely available on the island, so your Redang Island holiday does not have to be a dry one. Prices are reasonable in the shops, but restaurant wine can be very expensive for Malaysia. A few drinks on the beach or in a hotel would be a great way to relax after a long day of water sports. Resort food is not usually very adventurous, so for something a little more local, head to the Redang Laguna where Thai salads, Malay favourites and unusual cuisine are the orders of the day. The state dish is keropok lekor, or fish sausage, which is a very affordable meal. However if you fancy a tasty challenge, curried fish heads are extremely popular on the island; they are affordable and the experience would give you a great story to tell at the very least.
Holidays to Redang Island will usually cater to those seeking relaxation on the beach. There are also fantastic water sports opportunities present across the beautiful island, and you do not have to be an expert or have your own equipment to try them out.
