Holidays to Costa Dorada

Situated just south of Barcelona, Costa Dorada has everything you could ever want in a relaxing holiday away from it all. Less rugged than the coasts just north of Costa Dorada, the endless miles of flat, golden beaches offer a perfect respite for the perfect holiday.

Covering more than 6,000 square kilometres, Costa Dorada has something to offer everyone, from immaculate beaches with crystal clear waters to towns built around an old castle. This combination of the old and new attracts people from all over the world. Holidays in Costa Dorada are incredibly enjoyable with each small town in the region offering something unique to your visit.

Dotted along the coastline as well as further inland are quaint, peaceful towns, farmlands, olive groves and such flourishing scenery that you will want to take a drive on one of the days of your Costa Dorada holiday. Among all of this, you will also find plenty of vineyards, as the region is home to some of Spain’s finest wines.

As you plan your holidays to Costa Dorada, be sure to include a visit to Tarragona, one of the region’s most historic cities. In Tarragona you will find what were once fishermen’s quarters, which are now dedicated to agricultural use, along the top of the hills near the sea. Tarragona was founded around 218BC, and is the birthplace of Pontius Pilate. Many years later, the Muslims occupied the city. Rich in ancient history, today’s Tarragona mixes ancient rustic attributes with modern urbanity. Filled with archaeological remains and medieval edifices, it is one of the most fascinating destinations in all of Catalonia.

In recent years, the tourist areas of Costa Dorada have been developed along the beaches but more attention should be placed on the inland towns of Valls, Reus, Tortosa, and Montblanc. Within these towns, and just outside them, Costa Dorada holidays can include a taste of ancient monasteries. Be sure to stop by the medieval monasteries of Santes Creus, Scala Dei, and Poble.

Beaches worth visiting on holidays to Costa Dorada include Cunit and Mont-Roig in the northern area. If you want something a little different, take in the Ebro delta, for long, wide beaches with fine sand and spectacular views. Just off each beach is a charming, manicured village rich in history and culture. The Ebro delta is actually the second largest wetland in the Mediterranean and covers more than 300 square kilometres. Not only does it offer spectacular beaches as mentioned, it is filled with several kinds of natural habitats ranging from salt-water lakes, fresh water ponds, and salt wastelands. If you love the great outdoors, the Ebro delta is a must-see.
