Holidays to Alicante

The land that Alicante sits on has been settled for over 7,000 years. It has been visited by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors, leaving the city with a rich and fascinating history which surrounds those on holidays in Alicante.

The strategic importance of the city is reflected in the medieval fortress, the Castle of Santa Barbara and its 19th century counterpart, the Castillo de San Fernando. The Castle of Santa Barbara is set on top of Mount Benacantil and offers magnificent panoramic views across the city and the Mediterranean.

Iglesia de Santa Maria is a fine example of a church built in the Gothic style. It stands on the site of an ancient Moorish mosque. The interior is lavishly decorated in Baroque style and contains many important works of art.

The Cathedral of San Nicolas was built in the 17th century with Renaissance and Baroque influences, and has a stunning blue dome and a gorgeous garden on the grounds which visitors on holidays to Alicante can stroll through.

Close to the cathedral is the Ayuntamiento, (Town Hall). It contains a dramatic statue of the artist Salvador Dali and the instrument that is used to measure the height above sea level of all other parts of Spain.

The Alicante Theatre is built in an Italian Neo-Classical style and the entrance is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome. Sumptuously decorated inside and beautifully detailed on the outside, it plays host to ballet, opera and dramatic productions.

The city is home to a number of excellent parks. The oldest is the Canalejas Park, created in 1886 by the architect Gonzolez Altus. It features sculptures, an elaborate fountain and the map of Spain carved from stone. The best place to have a casual stroll while on Alicante holidays is the Parque del Morant with its shady avenues, plants and water features. You may also be able to catch one of the open air performances in the park’s auditorium.

The miles of beautiful beaches mean you will be able to chill out and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine with ease. With the sea on one side and mountains on the other, there are plenty of activities for those who enjoy a more energetic holiday. The mountains offer trekking and hiking opportunities while the sea offers diving, jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. You can also take to the air with paragliding and skydiving.

The city has plenty of places to keep even the most avid shopper busy. The traditional El Barrio area is popular with both locals and tourists. Plaza Mar 2 is the ultimate in the modern shopping experience and there are plenty of other places across the city.

Alicante is renowned as one of the best places in Spain for nightlife. You will be able to go to a different club or bar every night of your stay if you so wish.

Alicante is the ideal mixture of resort and city break. The stunning beaches, beautiful architecture, shopping and activities mean travellers on holidays to Alicante will never be short of something to do in this wonderful city.
