Holidays to Naples

That quintessential Italian dish, the pizza, adopted as a favourite by the rest of the world, had its origins here in Naples, as did spaghetti, and on the food side there is no shortage of variety to satisfy every taste and pocket. With great shopping, fantastic views across the bay, castles, museums and galleries galore, holidays in Naples have everything for the perfect break.

Anyone with even a passing interest in classical history must pay a visit to the famous National Archaeological Museum of Naples with its incomparable collections of Greek and Roman remains. This was after all one of the heartlands of the Roman Empire, and everyone who was anyone in Roman society came here. Naples was the playground of the rich and famous in toga times, and remains to this day a magnet for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

The collections of sculptures, gems, glassware, mosaics and, not least, assorted erotica from Pompeii give a good idea of what life must have been like in those days, from wining and dining to theatre-going, political manoeuvring and hedonism. The ancient Romans had specific ideas of what constituted a good night out, and often leave us behind no matter how decadent many of us consider ourselves to have become in the modern world.

The Cathedral or Duomo of Naples dates from the 13th century in the High Gothic style with its soaring towers and buttresses, and houses the blood of Saint Gennaro, patron saint of Naples. His miraculously preserved red cells are taken out of cold storage and exhibited to the masses as the highlight of a great annual religious festival. For the remains of the older, pagan religions that preceded Christianity in these parts, see the nearby columns incorporated into the 4th century Basilica Santa Restituta, cannibalised from the Temple of Apollo.

The Piazza del Plebiscito is the centre of the modern city, its vibrant hub, and it is here that you will travel to after a long day of sightseeing, to relax over a meal and a cool drink, and during the daytime you can drop into the adjoining Royal Palace and obtain a fine city view from its roof garden.

On your Naples holidays head for the main street, the Spaccanapoli, which is always bustling, alive, and lined with trinket shops, restaurants, cafes, and boutiques. It is also the heart of the original Roman city, and you can imagine the crowds bustling along this very same street all those centuries ago, when Rome was the centre of the world and its rulers came to relax here, just like you have.
