Lake Como is the third biggest lake in Italy and possesses stunning scenic views, attracting tourists from all over the world. It is also one of Europe’s deepest lakes and is especially popular with wealthy people and aristocrats. The lake is home to an array of beautiful villas and palaces, which several famous people own, or have owned, including George Clooney, Sylvester Stallone and Richard Branson, to name a few.

Boat excursions around Lake Como are a popular way to explore the area in one trip. You may get guided tours and special stop-off points with sites of interest recommended to you to check out. This way of travel can be very relaxing and adds a sense of luxury to your Italian holiday in the sun.

The beauty of Lake Como is astounding and any visitor will enjoy the beautiful views it has to offer of the charming lakeside villages and surrounding mountains from a boat. Evening excursions may be a good choice for the more romantically inclined, and may also include dinner and dancing. Seeing the lake and surrounding areas lit up at night will certainly ensure an extra-special evening.

Known as one of the most beautiful lakes within Europe, Lake Como is well worth visiting. Its shape is a ‘Y’ and starts at Colico, running down to towns including Como and Lecco at the end of the south-west and south-east branches. Boat trips can be taken between Bellagio, Verenna and Managgio in a form of triangular service, allowing tourists to visit many picturesque towns situated along the lake. There is a pre-alpine, mountainous region between Como, Bellagio and Lecco, which adds to the natural beauty of the area.

Roman lakeside villas line the waters and many have lovely gardens that are home to a variety of tropical plants. These impressive gardens, complete with fountains, sculptures and steps leading down to the lake, add to the grand atmosphere of the area.

Tourism is vital to the local economy and many people travel to the area from all over the world to experience the beautiful views and enjoy the boat trips. The climate is typically Mediterranean and both tropical and sub-tropical plants grow all year long. As well as the stunning landscapes, the lake is known for its wildlife and for its spas. Kite-surfing, sailing and windsurfing, are available for the more adventurous visitor.

With three main boat/ferry services in the area, operating various excursions, there is plenty of choice when looking to explore. Ferries travel between the popular villages, such as Menaggio, Verenna, Bellagio, and Cadenabbia, which are situated mid-lake. Some ferries also carry vehicles.

Motorship services travel along the western and northern parts of the lake, between Piona or Colico and Como town, plus extra shuttles to the mid-lake regions. Faster services travel these same routes, but via hydrofoils, which are much quicker and take fewer stops, although this form of travel costs extra.
