Holidays to Capri

Holidays to Capri take you to an island of many contrasting elements. Those primarily interested in shopping will find a lot of interesting boutiques to explore here, with a range of luxury and souvenir objects produced by local craftsmen, and there are also plenty of walks in a beautiful landscape.

The views are stunning and there are plenty of great walks along the cliffs with panoramas of the deep blue sea. The Emperor Tiberius built his infamous palace here, where he spent most of his declining years in orgiastic entertainments that have become synonymous with Roman decadence and cruelty. It is said that his tormented spirit still wanders the corridors of his vanished palace at night.

It is best to visit Capri for a week or more, as trying to appreciate its attractions on a day trip will simply leave you frustrated at what seems like a glorified shopping trip. The natural attractions are the best thing about this island, so you need a few days at least to explore them.

Most hotels are located in Capri Town in the commercialised centre of the island, with Anacapri less hectically situated on the plateau above. Monte Solaro with its fine views is accessible by chairlift from Anacapri, whilst if you’re more interested in nightlife and shopping Capri Town is the place to head for.

The views from all parts of the island are quite magnificent, with a splendid panorama that takes in the Bay of Naples, a playground for the rich and famous even in ancient Roman times. The Roman Republican general Marius built a retirement villa for himself in the style of a fort overlooking the bay, and on Capri you can still see the remains of Tiberius’ palace. These are on the site of the Villa Jovis, with the cliffs nearby being the site of his many executions of political enemies. Don’t stand too close to the edge at night, or you might feel the brush of a ghostly hand on your back.

All holidays to Capri usually take in a trip to the Grotta Azzurra, a huge cave hollowed out of the cliffs. This is a great tourist attraction with its amazing and colourful rock formations lit up by coloured lights and providing wonderful photo opportunities. The intensity of the blue tones and the magical silvery light that fills this enormous cave will leave you breathless with wonder. Tourists are taken there in twos and threes by small fishing boats and have to lie on the bottom of the boat to get through the low entrance.

You don’t have to be rich or famous to enjoy holidays in Capri, only appreciative of great natural beauty.
