Holidays to Copenhagen

Copenhagen holidays allow the city to demonstrate green living: it is Europe’s greenest city with strict anti-pollution laws, no vehicles allowed in the town centre, and bicycles outnumber the cars on the streets.

The most iconic image of Copenhagen is the statue of the Little Mermaid. Sculpted by Edward Ericksen, it is based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen and cemented the legends that the home of all Mermaids was the Mermaid Banks in Øresund, which no longer exist.

Copenhagen has numerous museums to tempt art aficionados on their holidays in Copenhagen. With 10,000 works including Egyptian sculptures from 3000 BC, 5th century Roman exhibits, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents both ancient and modern art. The modern period collection dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and features Danish and French art.

All visitors to Copenhagen should explore Tivoli Gardens. Known all over the world, it is in the heart of Copenhagen and it is a unique amusement park. Local and international stars and musicians entertain on the various outdoor stages. You can visit a café, or stroll through the paths strewn with flowers and lush greenery. Visitors will also find theatres, roller coasters, and bars throughout the park.

Copenhagen holidays would be incomplete without visits to the four palaces. Amalienborg Palace is the winter residence of the royal family. It is not one palace, but four, each resplendent as one quarter of one of the world’s greatest examples of Rococo architecture. Each day, precisely at noon, the changing of the guard occurs. If a member of the royal family is in residence, flutes and drums accompany the Watch.

Christiansborg Palace is the seat of the Folketinget (the Danish Parliament), the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and the Royal Reception Rooms. Frederiksberg Palace was built in 1699 and today is the palace’s historical archive. Much of the interior and the many of the staterooms are well preserved and open to the public. The last palace, Rosenborg was erected as a summer palace and is in the centre of the city. Rosenborg is the repository for the crown jewels and regalia of the Danish monarchy as well as the Royal Danish Chronological Collections.

Visitors on holidays to Copenhagen will be delighted with a trip to the Round Tower, the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. Inside the tower, tourists climb up the 268.5-metre spiral ramp to the viewing platform 40 metres above street level.

However, Copenhagen holidays would be incomplete without visits to the Strøget, the longest shopping area in Europe, stopping by house number 20 in Nyhavn Harbour where Hans Christian Andersen penned his first fairy tale, Freetown Christiania, founded by hippies in 1971 and the Carlsberg Brewery and Visitors Centre, where you can tour the facility and sample the products.
