Holidays in the Czech Republic will most likely have travellers touring through the capital city of Prague. This culture-filled wonder of a city has a castle as its main centrepiece. The story of this country’s capital goes back to the Celtic tribes, to 400 BC.
The ancient history of the country, and in particular the city of Prague, has afforded it some of the most striking memorabilia including the Charles Bridge, the University, St. Vitus Cathedral and the New Town on Wenceslas Square.
Czechoslovakia suffered terrible losses during its invasion of the Nazis in WWII and then again for five decades when it was locked under Soviet communist rule. The “Velvet Revolution” from communism occurred in 1989 and the city of Prague has quickly become one of the greatest and most powerful cities in Europe.
This incredible history has resulted in the country being honoured with many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of them is Cesky Krumlov, which is thought to be one of the most beautiful towns in all the Czech Republic. Key sites to visit are its medieval buildings, fairytale castle and Vltava River.
There are many great things to do during holidays in the Czech Republic. Holidaymakers can spend time exploring the Kutna Hora ancient silver mine or visit one of the dozens of country houses and castles scattered throughout the countryside. Some of the more notable castles worth a visit are the Disney-esque Karlaitejn from the 14th century, the magnificent Hluboka, the striking Konopiaita and the impressive Vranov.
Officially listed as the “City of a Thousand Spires,” Prague has become one of the most stunning cities in Europe. Holidays to the Czech Republic will display how impressively well preserved Prague’s core has remained. It is noticeable when shopping in the local boutiques, visiting one of the many museums or enjoying an excellent local beer.
For a more natural scene, try visiting Aumava National Park where you can enjoy the incredible rock pinnacles as well as many of the amazing underground rivers of the Moravian Karst. The eastern half of the country is where the rich agricultural area of Moravia can be found, offering wooded hills and endless vineyards.
Weather
When taking holidays to the Czech Republic there is never a bad time to visit this amazing country, however since the climate is mixed, many visitors prefer to come during the least wet season, which is May to September. July is when the most rainfall takes place and February is when the Czech Republic receives the least amount of rain. However, February is considered the coldest month with temperatures dipping down as far as 45ºF or –17ºC.
Currency
Your Czech Republic holidays will include using the official local currency, the Czech Crown (koruna). The Czech Republic does not officially accept other currencies yet, although some hotels and restaurants may take Euros.
