Holidays to Split

Overview of Split holidays

At the top of the list of sights to see during holidays in Split must surely be the historic Cathedral of St Domnius, transformed from the mausoleum of the Emperor Diocletian, containing monuments that go back as far as the 13th century. As well as being a prime sightseeing stop in its own right, the cathedral also has a tower that it is possible to climb, for an entrance fee and this affords a good view of the surrounding city, to become orientated and to plan the next steps in exploring the rest of the sights.

Diocletian’s Palace has been designated a world heritage site and no holiday to this destination would be complete without at least some time spent in this area, appreciating the remarkable architecture and the sense of history. However, Split is not a city that is simply a museum piece and there is a lively modern scene as well, to give holidays an energetic side. While there are plenty of museums and churches to occupy a few days of sightseeing, there are also a good number of speciality restaurants, shops and clubs that can take up the hours after museum closing time.

If you want to spend a little time out of town while on holiday a good place to start is the trail up to Marjan Hill, from where the Marjan Peninsula can be reached on foot. A reasonably short walk of about 10 minutes is enough time to reach a cafe terrace that provides excellent views of the city of Split below and much of the surrounding area, including a number of the islands out in the Adriatic Sea. Walking further is rewarded with a better view from the heights of the peninsula and from here it is possible to carry on and enjoy a ramble along the south coast of the peninsula, passing chapels and rock caves on the way. This walk eventually comes out in the area of Bene Bay, also accessible by bus from Split, which is one of the places to come for those people who would like to spend part of their holidays at the local bathing areas or chilling at a loc.
