Holidays to Fuerteventura

If you prefer active nightlife there is plenty of it to be had on the neighbouring islands, but Fuerteventura has its own distinctive charms and attractions, and holidays in Fuerteventura will never leave you disappointed.

One of the major selling points of holidays to Fuerteventura is its magnificent beaches. The southern tip of the island around Jandia has the best beaches, such as the popular Juan Gomez beach. There are also a number of black volcanic beaches to stretch out on, and many small and secluded beaches should you want some privacy. You can also go nude on any of the island’s beaches if you wish.

One of Fuerteventura’s interesting historic sites is the quaint little village of La Oliva. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, this was home to the island’s Spanish governors, and the Governor’s residence has been refurbished and is open to public viewing to experience how the rich lived in those days. There are also a couple of attractive churches and a bell tower to see, and an attractive art centre displaying the works of local artists.

Any kids in your party on your holidays to Fuerteventura will love a trip to the local zoo at La Lajita. The Oasis de los Camellos Zoo does not contain a huge selection of animals but it is strong on entertainment, with parrot shows and camel safaris amongst the interactive activities, and there is also a palm-fringed bar and a seafood restaurant in the village.

The town of Betancuria was built as the first capital of Fuerteventura by a Norman adventurer in 1405. It did so well that is was soon attracting the interest of local pirates, who ended up sacking it and the population had to move elsewhere. Nowadays it contains a small ethnography and archaeology museum containing artefacts from the region and in the nearby Casa Santa Maria artists can be seen working. Wine and cheese tasting at the local restaurant is also popular with visitors.

Although Fuerteventura does not have the same sort of hectic nightlife and crowded beaches as Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, the charming town of Puerto del Rosario has a unique ambiance that more than compensates for the noise and activity of some other main towns in this island group. It used to be called Goat Harbour because of the predominance of goats there, said to outnumber its human inhabitants. Now, it does full justice to its more romantic modern name by offering spectacular views of the red sun setting into the ocean over its whitewashed houses.

Fuerteventura holidays are fantastic for the whole family, with numerous historic and cultural attractions as well as the fabulous beaches and tropical island atmosphere, guaranteed weather and welcoming locals.
