Holidays to Sofia

Overview of Sofia holidays

As the capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia is one of the most recent capital cities to have joined the European Union, which brings with it a greater degree of economic stability and easier access for European travellers. In line with this, the city has drawn praise for the youthful and energetic atmosphere and holidays are likely to include a good taste of the new urban chic as well as a look at some of the older historic elements of the city.

A taste of the new life in Sofia is most likely to start in the more modern shopping areas of the city, such as the Mall of Sofia and the Sofia city centre. However, many visitors are also likely to be attracted by a taste of shopping for older items and in less high-profile brand stores than those that occupy the modern malls. Shopping for souvenirs and religious icons around the magnificent memorial church can be an experience in itself, although you need to be aware that not all items on sale at the stalls are necessarily genuine.

Away from the shops and the stalls the sights available for visitors on Sofia holidays are relatively extensive for a fairly small capital city. The park at Borisova Gradina is home to some notable sporting venues and some monuments reflecting the old times. Alternatively, perhaps for a damp day in the city, there are a number of museums that are likely to be of interest, including the National Museum of Military History. However, holidays in Sofia are also likely to include a couple of days just strolling around the city, taking in architectural sights such as the Aleksander Nevski church, the Royal Palace, the Svet Georgi Rotunda and Bulgaria Place with the National Palace of Culture (NDK).

For a trip out of town, the nearby Mount Vitosha offers possibilities for hiking and skiing, if you would like some out of town exercise during your holiday. Alternatively, consider a trip into the country and a tour to a Bulgarian village or the imposing Rila Monastery in the Pirin Mountains.
